LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The #5-seeded University of Oregon volleyball team (30-4) upset a top-ranked Penn State team (33-3) in 3-1 fashion for the second time in as many years and continued its quest for a national championship.

In front of a crowd of 13,385, UO staked a 21-25, 30-28, 25-22, 25-19 victory to dispatch the five-time NCAA champion Nittany Lions who were also making their 10th semifinal appearance Thursday night.

"I'm probably not supposed to say this," Oregon head coach Jim Moore said, "but I have no idea how we won. Penn State is a phenomenal team, but I also love my team. They're a special group, and they proved how tough they are.  We certainly didn't play at the level we wanted to offensively, but a lot of that had to do with what Penn State did on defense."

Thursday's decision at the KFC Yum! Center means UO will now play for the 32nd annual NCAA Championship vs. #3 seed Texas (28-4) on Saturday evening at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2 / ESPN3.com.

The Longhorns earned their bid after a 3-2 win over Michigan (27-12) immediately before on Thursday evening.

Fans that expected fireworks between two of the nation's top offenses must have been a little surprised.

Coming into Thursday's tilt, the Ducks topped the nation in kills for their 33 prior matches (15.97 per set), and stood ninth in hitting (.296), while Penn State stood 20th and third respectively (14.35 p/s, .307).

However, it was the defensive numbers that jumped out in the final comparisons.

UO tied its season high in blocks (10.0) to make up for its second-lowest hitting mark of '12 (.170) - partly attributed to Penn State's 19.5 blocks (a non-five-set team season high).

Conversely, the Ducks held an opponent to .200 or below for the 22nd time this year. The Big Ten champion Lions' mark (.165) was its season low and only their second below .200 on the campaign.

The Oregon defense also combined on 80 digs - its season-high in a non-five-set match - and trailed only its 83 in five-setters vs. Stanford and Washington.

In other team comparisons, UO held edges in kills (63-52), assists (58-52), fewest service errors (1-6) and digs (80-67); and the two teams tied in aces (6-6).

The balanced Duck offense featured three hitters with +10 kills for the 15th time this season, and the trio also staked double-doubles - sophomore outside hitter Liz Brenner (17 kills, 17 digs), and senior outside hitters Alaina Bergsma (16K, 15D) and Katherine Fischer (16K, 12D).

Freshman middle blocker Canace Finley led in blocks (6) for the 11th time this year, and tied her and Bergsma's previous season high. The Fort Collins, Colo., native added six kills and hit .417 - her eighth +.400 total of the season and the only Duck hitter to top .250 on the night.

Brenner topped the team at the service line (2), and three others also rang up solo aces (Bergsma, Fischer and senior defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki).

Brenner and junior middle blocker Ariana Williams added four blocks, and Bergsma ended with three.

Also on defense, senior libero Haley Jacob topped the team in digs (20) and logged her 11th, 20-dig tally of the year and 25th career-wise.

Pac-12 Setter of the Year Lauren Plum ended with 51 assists - her 11th +50 tally of the season - and added nine digs, two blocks and an ace.

Plum also moved to second all-time for UO in assists in a season (1,577) with its best mark since the start of rally scoring in 2001.

Other Ducks that also enjoyed similar improvements included Bergsma (attack attempts, seventh, 1,223) and Jacob (digs, fourth, 515).

For Penn State, its offense was again paced by Ariel Scott (18 kills, .231, 5 blocks) and Deja McClendon (14 kills, .120, 9 digs, 3 aces). Other category leaders included Micha Hancock (45), Dominique Gonzalez (22 digs) and Katie Slay (7 blocks).

Thursday's match was a rematch of sorts between the two teams who had met in late August 2011 in State College, Pa., to open the season. That similarly-manned but unranked Duck squad won 3-1 over the then-four-time defending national champions, and ended their NCAA-record, 94-match home winning streak.

More importantly, the list of 'firsts' continues for the Duck program this season. UO upped its school record tally to 30 wins after it took a best-ever second-place in the Pac-12 Conference with a 16-4 league mark.

Oregon's pair of wins last weekend in the NCAA Third and Fourth Rounds were its first-ever in NCAA Regional play. The Ducks now play for a national title against a Texas squad that claimed win and two runner-up finishes among its previous seven NCAA semifinal trips.

"Tonight was extremely exciting," Brenner said, "and we can't wait until Saturday night.  The longer we keep playing, the more fun we have.  We know Texas is a great team, and we look forward to playing them. We have lots of work to do before then, and then we will take it one play at a time."
