EUGENE, Ore. -- Sophomore guard Garrett Sim scored a season-high 19 points and added career-highs with eight rebounds and six assists in leading the University of Oregon men’s basketball team to a 79-51 win over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday evening at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Ducks improved to 5-4 overall with victory, while the Devils dropped to 1-9 on the year.

Sim, one of three Ducks to score in double figures, went 6-of-12 from the floor including 5-of-9 on shots behind the 3-point arc. Freshman forward Jamil Wilson recorded 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in playing a season-high 30 minutes. Sophomore forward Jeremy Jacob had a career-high 11 points and six rebounds.

Oregon shot 49.2 percent from the floor (30-of-61) while making 40.9 percent on 3-pointers (9-of-22). UO hit 10-of-16 free throw attempts for 62.5 percent. MSVU was limited to 36.4 percent shooting (16-of-44). The Devils made 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from behind the 3-point arc and 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) on free throws.

MVSU was led offensively by Julius Cheeks who scored 21 points in playing the full 40 minutes of the game. Cheeks was the only MVSU player to score in double figures. Shannon Behling had a team-high six rebounds.

Mississippi Valley State held an 11-8 lead with 14:55 remaining in the first half, the Devils’ final lead of the game. The Ducks jumped ahead on a dunk by Wilson at the 13:51 mark, assisted by Sim, which gave Oregon a 13-11 advantage.

A 3-pointer by sophomore forward Drew Wiley, which was followed-up by a made basket by freshman forward E.J. Singler, capped a 12-0 run by the Ducks over a two and a half minute span (from 14:50 to 11:30).

The Ducks out-scored MVSU, 17-8, over the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 40-24 lead into the locker room. Sim, Wilson and Wiley each had six points to lead UO at the break.

Over the first 20 minutes, the Ducks shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the field and 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the 3-point arc. UO went 4-of-5 from the free throw line in the half. MVSU was limited to 40 percent shooting in the half (10-of-25).

The second stanza started out slow for both teams. Sim found Armstead for a 3-pointer at the 17:15 mark, the first bucket of the half for the Ducks. The two teams combined for five points over the half’s first four minutes, with Oregon maintaining a 43-26 edge with 15:43 on the clock.

Sim was the first Duck to reach double figures in scoring after hitting a 3-pointer from the corner with 12:35 in the game to give UO a 51-28 lead. Wiley scored on a put-back off a missed Armstead 3-pointer, bolstering the lead to 27 points with 11:07 in the contest.

Singler found Wilson for a monster dunk with just under 3-minutes to play, closing a seven-minute span where the Ducks out-scored MVSU, 21-15.

Oregon out-scored MVSU, 18-2, in the painted area over the second half.

The Ducks (5-4) will return to action Saturday, Dec. 19 with a home game against Oakland.
