EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon walked away from its game with No. 2 Stanford pleased with its effort, but despite bothering the defending Pac-10 champs throughout game with constant pressure, it wasn’t enough in Saturday’ 100-80 loss to the Cardinal at Mac Court. The Ducks (12-7, 3-4) trailed 80-75 with 8:35 remaining, but Oregon finally couldn’t keep the pace with Stanford (17-1, 7-0) and went cold offensively as the Cardinal ended the game on a 20-5 run. In the end, the Ducks didn’t have an answer for Stanford sophomore Nnemkadi Ogwumike. The Cardinal starting forward scored a career-high 30 points and got to a career-best 23 rebounds – the most any player in the Pac-10 has pulled down this season. The Cardinal had five players finish in double figures as Jayne Appel scored 17, and Jeanette Pohlen stretched the Ducks’ zone defense scoring 15 points and knocking down a career-high tying five three-pointers. Stanford lived around the three-point line early before making a presence in the post. The Cardinal knocked down eight first-half three-pointers and finished the game 13-of-35 from behind the arc. For the game, the No. 2 Cardinal shot 50.0 percent (35-of-70) from the floor, and outrebounded Oregon 48-36. Rosalyn Gold-Onwude finished with 11 points and a game-high tying six assists, while JJ Hones chipped in 10 points and six assists off the bench. Oregon had a sophomore of its own causing Stanford fits. Point guard Nia Jackson scored a career-high 26 points (18 in the first half) as she consistently attacked the basket and caused turnovers in the full-court press. Jackson’s fast pace proved to be difficult for Stanford to contain as the Seattle native had three three-point play opportunities and was 8-of-15 from the free-throw line. Jackson also led Oregon with four assists and three steals. Micalea Cocks added 17 points for Oregon, while senior Taylor Lilley scored 16 points and knocked down four three-pointers while tallying three assists. The Cardinal outscored Oregon by 16, 46-30, in the second half, after taking just a 54-50 lead into halftime. Stanford turned its four-point lead into double-digits, 75-65, after a Pohlen three-pointer with 12:40 remaining. The Ducks kept within closing distance for most of the game until the 3:41 mark. With Stanford leading 91-80, the Ducks failed to score missing on five field goals, two free-throw attempts, while turning it over once. The first half was a different story as Oregon rattled Stanford early on. The Ducks had a 13-9 lead at the 15:42 mark, but Stanford went on a 11-4 run to take a 21-15 advanatge. The Cardinal lead climbed to as much as 11, 31-20, with 9:37 to go, but the Ducks closed with a 16-6 run of their own. During that stretch, Lilley, Johnson and Cocks all got on the scoreboard as Jackson continued to cause problems with two three-point play opportunities. In the first half, Oregon scored 17 points off Stanford’s 11 turnovers. NOTES UP NEXT TICKETS MAC COURT MEMORIES |
