EUGENE, Ore. – Juniors Jen Stoltenberg and Rianna Mansfield each scored goals in leading the University of Oregon soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Fresno State on Sunday. The win was the Ducks’ first of 2009, evening their record to 1-1 overall on the season. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

“I’m really pleased with the shutout for the team, and the goal scoring chances that we created were impressive,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “The whole back line did a good job - I think that those guys were near perfect defensively.”

Oregon dominated statistically, out-shooting the Bulldogs 22-5, with 13 of UO’s shots on goal. The Ducks also earned seven corner kicks to Fresno State’s two. Oregon was whistled for eight fouls in the match, while Fresno State had only three.

Stoltenberg, from Mission Viejo, Calif., scored the match’s first goal in the 15th minute. Freshman forward Julie Armstrong started the build-up with a pass out wide to fellow frosh Kelsey Hones. Stoltenberg, at the back post, one-timed a Hones’ pass for the score.

UO’s second goal came in the 75th minute on a header by Mansfield off a cross from freshman forward Tahne Apo.

Oregon sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles registered her seventh career shutout in the win, finishing with three saves while playing the full 90 minutes.

Stoltenberg led all players with a match-high five shots, three of which were on goal. Senior midfielder Teresa Bowns added four shots, while Apo, Hones, Mansfield and junior midfielder Bree Rowe each had three shots in the match.

“We won the 50-50 balls, we battled in the air really well,” Erickson said. “That was something we took away from the Portland match wanting to improve.”

Oregon defenders Nicole Bakke, Dani Oster and Danielle Sweeney joined Rowe and Miles as those who played all 90 minutes in the match.

Bulldog goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel had 11 saves while playing the duration of the contest. Bradlee DeShane had a team-high two shots in 86 minutes of action.

Oregon (1-1) returns to action Sept. 4-6 at the Colorado Classic in Boulder, Colo. The Ducks will face Colgate in a neutral-site match on Friday at 2 p.m., before closing the weekend against host team Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m.
