One of the greatest distance runners in UO history, Galen Rupp became just the third Duck ever to win the NCAA individual Cross Country championship when he accomplished that feat in the fall of 2008. Joins Oregon legends Steve Prefontaine and Alberto Salazar as the school’s cross country national champions. Led Oregon to back-to-back NCAA Cross Country team championships in 2007-08. Redshirted the 2008 track season to focus on the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, where he qualified for his first Olympic Games by finishing second in the 10,000 meters (27:43.11) at Historic Hayward Field. A nine-time All-American. Two-time Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional cross country champion. American collegiate 10,000 meter record holder (27:33.48). Two-time NCAA 10,000 meter runner-up and UO record-holder in the event. Also owns UO’s indoor 3,000- and 5,000-meter records. 2006 and 2008 Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of Year. 2008 Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s cross country. Overall owns six career All-America awards in track and three in cross country.
Fall 2008: 2008 Olympian. The 2008 NCAA national champion in cross country. Won his first NCAA title by running a LaVern Gibson Course record 29:03.2 on the 10,000 meter circuit in Terre Haute, Ind. Became just the third national champion from Oregon, joining legends Steve Prefontaine (1970-71, 73) and Alberto Salazar (1978). Led Oregon to its second straight NCAA team cross country title and the school’s sixth overall. Also earned his ninth career All-America award. Won all three races he entered in the fall, including his second straight win in the NCAA West Regional (27:41.24), where he was 51 seconds faster than his closest competition. Became just the third Duck to post back-to-back NCAA West Regional wins, joining Jim Hill (1981-83) and Karl Keska (1995-96) in that elite club. Led Oregon to its third straight NCAA West Regional title. Made season debut a memorable one by winning the Pacific-10 Championships by nearly 30 seconds. Led Oregon to its third straight team title. Set a Springfield Country Club course record by running 22:55.14, beating the previous mark by 25 seconds. Became just the third Duck to win multiple Pac-10 cross country titles, joining Prefontaine (1970-71, ‘73) and Hill (1982-83). Was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA West Regional Athlete of the Year, the Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year and the Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It is the first time that one athlete has won those four awards in the same season. Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic first team.
2007-08: All-American in cross country. 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials participant. Ran in three races in the fall: the Pac-10, NCAA West Regional and the NCAA Championships, finishing first once and second in the other two events. Opened up at the Pac-10 Championships where he help Oregon win the team title with a runner-up finish (22:59) to teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott. Was the individual champion at the NCAA West Regional (29:36) in leading the Ducks to the team crown. Ran second at the NCAA Championships (29:24), leading five Oregon All-Americans across the finish line as the Men of Oregon won their first cross country national championship since 1977. Earned All-America honors for the second time in cross country and the eighth time overall in his UO running career. Redshirted the 2008 track season to concentrate on the Olympic Trials, where he finished second in the 10,000 meters (27:43.11) to qualify for his first Olympic Summer Games. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, set the American Olympic record in the 10,000 meters with his 13th place finish in 27:36.99. Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic first team. 2006-07: Set the U.S. collegiate record in the 10,000 meters (27:33.48). World Championships Qualifier in the 10,000 meters and an All-American in both cross country and track. Placed sixth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Overall, led team in all five of his races with Oregon’s 10th Pac-10 individual cross country title and another win in the Mike Hodges Invitational (23:03.2), and top-five finishes in Bill Dellinger Invitational (second) and West Regional (fourth). Outdoors on track, became UO’s 14th World Championships men’s distance qualifier. Earlier in postseason, claimed second NCAA 10,000 meters runner-up honors, running 28:56.19, staked UO’s second-ever Pac-10 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters double in same season, and won the West Regional 5,000 meters. During season, broke the UO 10,000 meters record once held by Bill McChesney, Jr. (27:50.82, 1982) when he ran his collegiate record at the Stanford Invitational. Also ranked fourth outdoors among collegians in the 5,000 meters (13:30.49) and sixth all-time for UO. Indoors, became first Duck to stake four individual All-America honors in his career with his finishes in the NCAA 3,000 meters (fourth, 7:56.79) and 5,000 meters (third, 13:40.38). During season, ran school records in the 3,000 meters (7:54.19) and 5,000 meters (13:38.62) and ranked top five nationally among collegians in each. 2005-06: NCAA All-American in track. In cross country, led team in the Willamette Invitational (sixth) and Pre-NCAA Invitational (12th). At the NCAA Indoor Championships earned All-America laurels with top-six placings in the 5,000 meters (fifth) and 3,000 meters (sixth). During regular season, his NCAA indoor automatic qualifying marks in the 5,000 meters (13:48.51) and 3,000 meters (7:54.90) then ranked first and third in school history. Outdoors, scored top-three finishes in the Pac-10 Championships 5,000 meters (third) and 10,000 meters (second). Earned NCAA outdoor 5,000 meters invitation after he placed third in the West Regional. Pac-10 and National All-Academic Track and Field First Team selection. 2004-05: NCAA All-American in track. During the outdoor track and field season, was team’s high point scorer in the Pac-10 (5,000 meters, fourth, 13:57.43; 10,000 meters, second, 29:28.09) and NCAA Championships (10,000 meters, second, 28:23.75) and helped UO to the Pac-10 team title and a ninth-place NCAA effort. Took second in the 1,500 meters in the USA Junior Championships (3:47.47) and fourth in Pan American Junior Championships (3:50.96). In between those races, ran 1,500 meters/3,000 meters double in the Einlauf meet in Germany in July (PR 3:44.39 / 8:04.62). A week later broke the U.S. junior 3,000 meters record in Lignano, Italy (7:49.16). Before Oregon: Led U.S. squad in 2005 World Junior Cross Country Championships (20th) in France in mid-March after he won the U.S. junior title in mid-February.
Prep: Claimed second in the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships as a senior (14:57). Won state cross country titles as a senior (14:55) and junior (14:56), and took sixth as a sophomore. Track and Field News Boys Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2004. As senior, ran state 1,500 meters record (3:45.3) en route to mile best (4:01.8). Also in ’01, led U.S. prep rankings in the mile (4:01.8), 3,000 meters (prep record 8:03.57) and 5,000 meters (U.S. junior record 13:37.91) and ranked second in the 1,500 meters (3:45.3). In 4A state meet as a senior, won the 1,500 meters (3:49.76) and 3,000 meters (8:22.00). Also scored in state meet as a junior in 1,500 meters (second, 3:53.58) and 3,000 meters (first, 8:14.36), and as a sophomore in 1,500 meters (eighth, 3:59.68) and 3,000 meters (third, 8:37.36).
