2008 Olympian
2-Time NCAA Champion (800, DMR)
4-Time All-American
2-Time Pac-10 Champion (800)
School Record (i-800, DMR)

One of the nation’s most exciting 800 meter runners at all levels earned his first two NCAA titles in 2009 and was an integral part of Oregon’s near-triple crown in 2008-09. Was the 2009 NCAA Outdoor champion at 800 meters and the NCAA Indoor 800 meter runner-up. Also ran the 800-meter leg on Oregon’s NCAA Indoor Champion and school record-setting distance medley relay team. Four-time All-American. A two-time Pac-10 champion at 800 meters and a Pac-10 scorer in both cross country and at 1,500 meters. His 800 meter runner-up performance remains one of the indelible moments of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. A 2008 Olympian. Is the first native of Vermont to run a sub-4:00 mile.

2008-09: The 2009 NCAA Outdoor and Pac-10 champion at 800 meters. Also was the 800 meter runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships and ran the anchor leg of Oregon’s winning distance medley relay team as the Ducks captured their first ever NCAA Indoor title. After helping the Ducks set the school record in the distance medley relay (9:29.39) at the UW Indoor Invitational in January, ran his second career sub-4:00 mile at the New Balance Invitational (3:59.11, third all-time indoors at Oregon). One week later, set the school record in the 800 meters in winning the Husky Classic in 1:47.03. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, helped lead Oregon to its first national title by taking second in the 800 meters (1:48.54) and running the 800-meter leg on Oregon’s national championship distance medley relay team (9:29.59), earning a pair of All-America certificates along the way. Outdoors, won all five finals at 800 meters and posted a first and a third at 1,500 meter for good measure. Opened up with a win at 800 meters versus UCLA (1:48.76) to help Oregon defeat the Bruins. Doubled up with a pair of victories at the Oregon Relays, taking the 1,500 meters in 3:40.92 and the 800 in 1:47.66. Helped Oregon win its third straight Pac-10 title with his second straight victory at 800 meters in 1:49.83 and a third-place finish at 1,500 meters in 3:51.27. Cruised to his second straight NCAA West Regional 800 meter title in 1:49.48. Gutsy effort at the NCAA Championships to claim his first outdoor title. Won his preliminary heat in 1:49.42 and captured his semifinal race in 1:46.21. In the final, overcame a tight calf down the stretch and used all of his 6-5 frame to lean at the tape and win in 1:46.21. In the fall, ran three races for the back-to-back NCAA cross country champions. Opened season by winning the Mike Hodges Invitational (19:40). Helped Oregon win its third consecutive Pac-10 title by finishing ninth (23:46.79) as the fifth Oregon runner to cross the line. Made NCAA Championships debut in his first 10,000 meter race. Season Bests: Outdoors - 800 Meters - 1:46.21, NCAA Championships, Fayetteville, Ark. (6/11/09 & 6/13/09). 1,500 Meters - 3:40.92, Oregon Relays, Eugene, Ore. (4/24/09). Indoors - 800 Meters - 1:47.03 (PR), Husky Classic, Seattle, Wash. (2/14/09); Mile - 3:59.11 (PR), New Balance Classic, New York, N.Y. (2/7/09).

2007-08: Phenomenal outdoor season for the 2008 Olympian saw him win 11 straight races before finishing second by .01 in the finals of the 800 meters at the NCAA Championships (1:45.32). That only served as a prelude to his silver medal run in the final of the 800 meters at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, clocking a PR 1:45.03 to become the first Oregon undergraduate to compete in the Olympic Games since Matt Centrowitz in 1976. That time ranks second on the school’s all-time 800 list. All-American was the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional champion in the 800. Also ranks sixth in the 1,500 meters (3:38.60). Became the first native of Vermont to run the mile in under 4:00 when he clocked a 3:58.16 at the Oregon Relays. Truly impressive run of victories in the 800 (nine straight) actually began in the indoor season with a win at the MPSF Championships (1:48.82). Nearly matched that time in his outdoor 800 debut in helping Oregon win the UCLA dual meet by taking the event in 1:48.83. Improved his best time to 1:47.82 in winning the Cardinal Invitational. After winning his preliminary 800 heat at the Pac-10 championships, set yet another personal best in winning the final in 1:46.83. Became Oregon’s first Pac-10 800 meter champion since Simon Kimata in 2002. Scored another pair of firsts in breezing though the preliminaries and finals  (1:47.93) at the NCAA West Regional. Was equally as impressive at the NCAA Championships, winning his two preliminary rounds in 1:48.88 and 1:47.15 to set up the most exciting race of the national meet. Just missed an NCAA Championship when he finished second to Texas’ Jacob Hernandez by one hundredth of a second in the finals. Set yet another personal best in that race, 1:45.32. In the U.S. Olympic Trials, thrilled the Hayward Field crowd by advancing through the two preliminary heats in 1:47.85 (first) and 1:46.23 (second), respectively, before taking part in the signature moment of the 2008 Trials, the final of the men’s 800. Hanging near the back of the pack with eventual champ Nick Symmonds for most of the race, Wheating used his trademark kick on the final curve to surge around the pack and finish second to Symmonds in a personal record 1:45.03 that ranks second all-time on the Oregon top 10. That finish earned him his first trip to the Olympic Games, where he took fourth in his preliminary round (1:47.05). Opened outdoor season with a 3:47.11 in the 1,500 meters to win the Pepsi Team Invite. Only other 1,500-meter race of the season was a win at the Oregon Twilight, where he ran a personal-best 3:38.60. Saw action indoors on the distance medley relay team, where he helped Oregon set the school record at the USATF Indoor Championships (9:34.06) and then finish ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships (9:36.80). In cross country, was one of six All-Pac-10 honorees for UO by finishing 14th in only his second collegiate race, and helped Ducks to repeat as team champions. Season Bests: Outdoors - 800 Meters - 1:45.03 (PR), U.S. Olympic Trials, Eugene, Ore. (6/30/08). 1,500 Meters - 3:38.60 (PR), Oregon Twilight, Eugene, Ore. (5/9/08). Mile - 3:58.16 (PR), Oregon Relays, Eugene, Ore. (4/25/08). Indoors - 800 Meters - 1:48.82, MPSF Championships, Seattle, Wash. (3/1/08).

2006-07: Pac-10 scorer in the 800 meters and an NCAA Regional qualifier in the 800 and 1,500 meters. At season’s end, led Ducks in the 800 meters (1:50.17). Valuable member of Mountain Pacific Championships distance medley champions, and part of three relays that ranked top-five in school history and met the NCAA provisional standard. Did not compete in cross country. Season Bests: Outdoors - 800 Meters - 1:50.17, Oregon Twilight, Eugene, Ore. (5/6/07); 1,500 Meters - 3:45.17, Oregon Invitational, Eugene, Ore. (4/20/07). Indoors - 800 Meters - 1:52.13, UW Indoor Invitational, Seattle, Wash. (1/27/07); Mile - 4:04.77, Husky Collegiate, Seattle, Wash. (2/10/07).

Prep: In his first season in track and field in 2006, ranked fourth nationally in 1,500 meters with his personal best from the USA Junior Championships (eighth, 3:54.28) and was also the fastest prep indoors in 2006 in the 5,000 meters (14:55.28). Ended outdoor season as one of four Duck freshmen that ranked top 10 nationally in 1,500 meters and placed top-10 in the USA Junior Championships. Coached as a prep by well-known distance mentor Jeff Johnson, and focused on soccer previous seasons.

Personal: Majoring in sociology.
