BEAUMONT, Calif. -- Freshman Robbie Ziegler shot a final round 73 to tie for second individually and lead Oregon to the 2009 Braveheart Classic team title Tuesday at the 7,003-yard, par-72 Oak Valley Golf Club.
The Ducks, who entered the final round with a 10-stroke advantage, carded a 296 on Tuesday to finish at 11-over 875 for the tournament. Oregon, which was never threatened in the final round, defeated Southern Utah by seven strokes and Arizona by eight shots for its first tournament victory since the 2007 ASU Thunderbird Collegiate. Loyola-Marymount and Cal Poly tied for fourth at 887 and No. 18 Tennessee was sixth at 892.
"To come down here and win with four freshmen and a sophomore is really an accomplishment," said head coach Casey Martin. "For us to be able to win a tournament like that, it’s huge."
Ziegler finished at 1-over 217 for the event and was tied with four other golfers for second, two strokes behind individual medalist Nate Page of Southern Utah, who finished at 1-under 215. It was the best collegiate finish for Ziegler and the second career top-four for the freshman from Canby, Ore.
"Robbie did a great job of competing really hard," said Martin. " He’s had the lowest scoring average for us all season. He’s one of the best competitors I’ve been around. He just hits it in the hole."
The Ducks had all five golfers finish in the top 25. In addition to Ziegler, freshmen Daniel Miernicki and Eugene Wong tied for 11th at 4-over 220. Miernicki, from Santee, Calif., closed with a 73 on Tuesday, while Wong, from North Vancouver, B.C., shot a 76. Sophomore Isaiah Telles from Tualatin, Ore., tied for 19th at 6-over 222 and freshman Andrew Vijarro from Bend., Ore., tied for 22nd at 223.
"There weren’t a lot of low scores because the greens are really fast and firm, which made it a difficult course," said Martin. "We had a big lead going into the final round and so we knew just had to avoid any major letdowns. We had a rough fall, but we’ve had two very good tournaments in the spring and are building some momentum and confidence."
Up next for Oregon is the lone home meet of the season, the Duck Invitational March 23-24 at Eugene Country Club.
