SUMMER 2009 The starting shortstop and hit in the top of the order for the Mankato Moondogs…helped lead Mankato to a 39-29 overall record including a postseason appearance, but the Moondogs fell in the NWL North Divisional Series to the Rochester Honkers…named to the 2009 NWL All-Star Team, Serna ended his summer by breaking Mankato’s single-season record for stolen bases with 25 swipes…hit .314 (55-for-175) over the summer with 30 runs scored, 16 RBIs, 16 walks, seven doubles and two triples.
AS A FRESHMAN • 2009 Oregon’s everyday shortstop, started 52 games for the Ducks...hit .228 (41-for-180) with 14 runs, five doubles, one triple, 14 walks and nine stolen bases...led the team with 19 RBIs and three home runs...defensively, led UO with 145 assists and 31 double plays turned...finished the year with a .931 fielding percentage...hit .375 with the bases loaded and .455 with a runner on third and less than two outs...had a .427 success rate advancing runners...also made two relief appearances on the mound, pitching a total of one inning...in Oregon’s historic season-opening 5-3 win at Saint Mary’s (2/20), was 2-for-5 with two RBIs...also recorded the first double of the modern era...went on a six-game hitting streak from March 1-7, batting .320 (8-for-25), with one double, one triple and three runs scored...his one-out, bases-loaded walk-off single gave Oregon a 3-2, 13-inning victory over Santa Clara (3/7)...in his first appearance on the mound was handed the ball with one down and the potential tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth, sandwiched a pair of outs around a base-on-balls to earn his first career save in a 6-5 victory at Nevada (3/13)...was 2-for-5 with a season-high four RBIs, which included his first collegiate home run vs. Sacramento State (3/24)...patiently waited out a two-out, bases-loaded walk to bring in UO’s first run in its 3-2, 10-inning victory over Oregon State (3/28)...hit the second home run of his career vs. Stanford (4/5)...was 2-for-4 with a solo home run - his third of the season - and a stolen base in the Ducks’ 5-3 victory at California (4/18)...his RBI sacrifice fly proved to be the game winner in Oregon’s 3-2 victory over UCLA (5/1).
HIGH SCHOOL A 2008 graduate of St. Bonaventure High School...a three-sport athlete for the Seraphs, played football, soccer and baseball...in 2008 was the starting shortstop for St. Bonaventure, leading the team to a 26-5 record...also pitched his way to a 9-1 record on the mound with 76 strikeouts...at the plate, hit .500 and produced 30 RBIs to go along with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 15 walks...set school records for career games played, RBIs, hits, doubles, steals and runs scored...on the gridiron, quarterbacked the St. Bonaventure football team to a 14-1 record, including a trip to the CIF State Division III Championship Bowl game, where he scored two touchdowns en route to a 35-21 victory...the Seraphs ended the year as the seventh-ranked team in the state according to MaxPreps.com, while he finished the year with 1,111 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns.
