Brooks’ Three Lifts Ducks Past Tennessee in Overtime
11/22/16 | Men's Basketball
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Dillon Brooks sank a deep three-pointer with :22 left in overtime to help No. 13 Oregon escape with a 69-65 victory over Tennessee Tuesday morning in the consolation round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
"I thought he was going to drive it," said Oregon head coach Dana Atlman. "When he pulled it up, it was one of those no, no, great shot."
The Ducks (3-2) will take on Connecticut in the consolation final Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Pacific (ESPN2).
Brooks, in just his second game back from an off-season foot injury, led Oregon with 17 points. He missed a 15-footer that would have given Oregon the win in regulation, but more than made up for it with his NBA-range three-pointer after Tennessee had tied the game at 65-65.
"Yeah, I knew I had to redeem myself," said Brooks. "I left it short. That's me being out of shape. But my players, you know, they gave me confidence, and they made big plays before I made that big play."
Chris Boucher added 11 points and five blocks for the Ducks and Casey Benson scored five of his eight points in the extra period.
How It Happened: Down by six with 1:45 left the in the first half, Oregon closed the period on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 32-32, and then opened the second period with a 9-0 run as Oregon looked on the verge of making the game a runaway.
But the Ducks' mounting turnovers – a season-high 21 – combined with the fact that Oregon was outrebounded by 10 in the second half, allowed the Volunteers (1-3) to crawl back into the game. After trailing all of the second half, Shembari Phillips sank a pair of free throws with :30 left in regulation for Tennessee that tied that game at 56-56.
The Ducks outscored the Volunteers 13-9 in the extra frame.
In the first half, the Ducks used a collaborative effort to offset Detrick Mostella's 18 points and used a 6-0 run to knot the game at 32-32 at the break. Boucher had nine in the opening frame, while Brooks and Jordan Bell added seven.
Who Stood Out: Brooks and Benson came off the bench to come through in overtime. Playing 25 minutes in just his second game back, Brooks repeatedly drove the lane and found a way to draw contact and get to the free throw line, where he sank seven-of-10 attempts. Benson, who did not start for the first time this season, drove the lane twice in overtime, converting a three-point play on one effort and getting fouled on the other, where he hit a pair of free throws.
Boucher was active again with five blocks, while Bell had three steals and nine boards.
Notes: The Ducks forced Tennessee into a season-high 25 rebounds, but committed a season-high 21 themselves … Oregon has also blocked at least eight shots in four of five games this season … Freshman Payton Pritchard made his first career start and scored six points.
What It Means: The Ducks have a chance to go 2-1 in Maui and build some momentum heading into a stretch that finds Oregon playing its next nine games in the State of Oregon.
Quotable:
UO coach Dana Altman
"We're not playing very well, but we had to find a way to win the game. So any way we could do to figure out a way to win was really important for us."
