Down 14 in the first half, Oregon took the lead in the final four minutes and held on to win, 68-63.
EUGENE, Ore. — Down 14 at one point in the first half, the Oregon men's basketball team came all the way back to beat Boise State on Monday, 68-63, before 6,824 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: A year after falling behind 17 and losing by two in Boise, the 23rd-ranked Ducks (5-2) finished the job this time. Dylan Ennis' three-pointer with 3:33 to play gave Oregon a 60-58 lead — its first since 6-4 — and after the Broncos tied it 60-all, the Ducks finished the game on an 8-3 run.
Chris Boucher gave the Ducks the lead for good with a free throw, and it remained 61-60 into a timeout with 1:22 left. Coming out of the break, Tyler Dorsey drove to the hole for a basket, and freshman Payton Pritchard made it 65-60 with a pull-up jumper after Boise State missed a three-pointer.
Oregon was dogged by turnovers most of the night, committing 15, and Boise State kept itself in control by making 11 of its first 23 three-point attempts — before missing its last five. The Broncos (3-3) made just 1-of-9 shots down the stretch.
In the first half, the Ducks scored on their first three possessions before going without a point for 4:23, helping Boise State take a 15-6 lead. The Broncos scored on five straight trips to go up 27-14, and they took their biggest lead at 29-15 with 8:17 left in the first half. Oregon used a late 9-0 run to go into halftime down 32-29, and Ennis' go-ahead three-pointer capped a 10-0 run by the Ducks into the lead.
Who Stood Out: Ennis scored a season-high 18 points, three off the career high he established while at Villanova. Dorsey added 17 points, and Jordan Bell had a well-rounded night with eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. In his home debut this season, Dillon Brooks missed his first seven attempts and scored just five points with four turnovers.
What It Means: The Ducks continue to struggle with ball movement, finishing with eight assists against the 15 turnovers. Thus, the chemistry they hoped to build in the month before Pac-12 play begins still is a ways away.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
On pulling out the victory
"You always are glad when you find a way to win. We obviously didn't play very well, but we did find a way to win, and that's always important. … Playing as poorly as we did, I thought we were fortunate."
Senior guard Dylan Ennis
On Oregon's struggles early in the game
"I think we're still getting it. Because we were ranked fourth to start the season, everyone expects us to be this monster team. But we still have work to do. … We've got a lot of new guys meshing in, and we're going to get it. Last year we had a few growing pains, but by the end of the year we got it right, and I think that's what we're going to do this year."
Notable: The Ducks held their opponent under 70 points for the sixth straight game, each outing since Army scored 77 in Oregon's opener. … Freshman forward M.J. Cage, who has yet to play this season, suited up for the first time. He's been recovering from a concussion and could still be held out as a redshirt, Altman has said. … Oregon's recently crowned NCAA women's cross country champions were honored during the first timeout of the first half. … Dwayne Benjamin, a senior on the 2015-16 Elite Eight team, attended the game and sat behind the Ducks' bench. Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers sat at one baseline.
Up Next: The Ducks remain at home to host Western Oregon on Wednesday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
