SOPHOMORE LINDSEY VANDER WEIDE ADDS THIRD-TEAM ALL-AMERICA TO ALREADY IMPRESSIVE RESUME; AMANDA BENSON EARNS HONORABLE MENTION
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon volleyball's Lindsey Vander Weide has earned AVCA third-team all-America honors to cap an accolade-filled sophomore campaign, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Amanda Benson was also honored with all-America honorable mention recognition.
Having already earned AVCA pacific north all-region and all-pac-12 honors, Vander Weide reeled in her first career all-America award after leading the Ducks in kills (379), kills per set (3.24) and service aces (0.32) while hitting .266 and adding 2.71 digs per set as a six-rotation player. The outside hitter also led the Ducks with 12 double-doubles and racked up the most kills in the Pac-12 in a three-set match with a career-high-tying 25 against California on Sept. 23.
"I am extremely proud and happy for Lindsey," head coach Jim Moore said. "She is such a great all-around player. Her ability to receive serve and play defense while still having the play at the net that she has is uncommon and very valuable. She is a joy to coach and I look forward to seeing her continue to get better over the next two years."
Vander Weide was consistently one of the most effective players in the Pac-12 throughout the 2016 season, earning a pair of Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors in a three-week span (Oct. 24 and Nov. 7) and finishing the year 10th in points per set (3.85).
The native of Turlock, Calif. is only the ninth player to earn an all-America selection in UO history, and the first since Martenne Bettendorf claimed third-team honors in 2014. Vander Weide is also only the second underclassman in program history to be named an all-American, joining Liz Brenner who earned second-team honors as a sophomore in 2012.
Benson claimed honorable mention honors after a stellar senior campaign in which she set career-highs with 575 digs (third in UO history) and 4.91 digs per set (fourth). The Litchfield Park, Ariz. native finished her UO career second all-time in both digs (2,146) and digs per set (4.63).
