Ducks Pull Away From PSU In Second Quarter
12/17/16 | Women's Basketball
Oregon led by three after one quarter but followed the lead of Lexi Bando and Ruthy Hebard to blow open Saturday's game in Portland.
PORTLAND — The Oregon women used a career night from Ruthy Hebard and a dominant second quarter to break open the game on their way to a 90-46 victory over Portland State on Saturday evening in the Moda Center.
How It Happened: Up 22-19 after the first quarter, the Ducks doubled their total in the second quarter while allowing just five points on 2-of-16 shooting by PSU to take a 44-24 lead into halftime. Hebard continued a strong nonconference season and had 20 points with 12 rebounds at the break, scoring 11 points during the second quarter.
PSU was within 30-24 midway through the second quarter when the Ducks pulled away. Lexi Bando hit a three-pointer, then Hebard scored on back-to-back trips. A three-point play for Hebard made it 40-24, she scored again late in the quarter and Bando finished with a flourish, slashing across the lane and banking in a left-handed shot that made it 44-24. Oregon's defensive momentum extended into the third quarter, in which the Viks went just 1-of-15. For the game Oregon shot .551 (38-69) while holding Portland State to .269 (18-of-67).
Who Stood Out: Hebard, who came into the night No. 1 in the country in field-goal shooting at .794, made 12-of-13 attempts in the game and finished with career highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds. Bando added 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers. Justine Hall continues to make a smooth transition off her redshirt season, as she shot 5-of-7 for 12 points Saturday.
What It Means: The Ducks (9-2) rebounded nicely from their second loss of the year, Wednesday at Ole Miss. They also showed they can win without standout freshman guard Sabrina Ionescu, who was not in uniform after suffering a broken bone in her hand prior to the Ole Miss game.
Quotable:
Head coach Kelly Graves
On his thoughts overall
"I'm pleased. I thought we played a good game in a lot of phases tonight. It was really exciting to play in the Moda Center; well, it was exciting for me to coach here, and I'm sure it was exciting for them to play."
On how the Ducks clicked in the second quarter
"When we really set our mind to it offensively, we executed really well. We got the ball to the right people. I'm really disappointed in Ruthy (laughs); she missed a shot tonight. She'll be running some extra lines tomorrow."
Notable: Along with Ionescu, Jayde Woods was not in uniform due to an injury suffered earlier in the week. … Senior Megan Trinder replaced Ionescu in the lineup for the opening tip, making her first start at Oregon. Trinder finished with a game-high eight assists. … Portland State junior Sidney Rielly is a Santa Clara transfer who scored five points in the Broncos' loss to the Ducks in December 2014. PSU's Ashley Bolston spent 2014-15 at Washington State but did not appear in either of the Cougars' two games against Oregon that season.
Up Next: The Ducks return to Matthew Knight Arena to host Idaho on Tuesday at noon.
