Oregon rallied back in the fourth quarter to defeat a veteran Dutch league team.
AMSTERDAM - The Oregon women's basketball team rallied back from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat a Dutch league team, 66-64, to open its European tour on Wednesday night at Sporthallen Zuid.
"Tonight was a great way to start our trip with a close win against a solid Dutch team," said head coach Kelly Graves. "I'm pleased with how everyone played double figure minutes and contributed."
HOW IT HAPPENED: Bremmel, which won the Dutch league title two seasons ago and features five players on the Netherlands national team, had a 62-60 lead with 1:17 to play before Mar'Shay Moore stole the ball and scored to tie it. She made another steal on the following possession and found Jacinta Vandenberg for a layup to give the Ducks a 64-62 advantage with 41 seconds left. After Bremmel scored to tie it up again, Lexi Bando hit a free throw line jumper with 15 seconds left and the Ducks held on for the two-point win.
In the first half, the Ducks scored first and led throughout the first 20 minutes of action, taking a 29-26 lead into the locker room. Oregon went 2-for-5 from three in the first half, despite shooting from the longer FIBA distance. The Ducks finished the game going 4-for-11 from three-point range and 26-of-59 from the field overall.
SCORING BREAKDOWN: Moore, one of just two seniors on the Oregon roster, finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including one three-pointer. Freshman forward Mallory McGwire tallied 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with seven boards. Bando had seven points in the first half and finished with 11, including her game-winning bucket. Lauren Yearwood had a strong game as well, finishing with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting.
MORE STATS: Vandenberg, who started alongside Oti Gildon, Bando, Yearwood and Megan Trinder, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. McGwire was second on the team with seven while Sabrina Ionescu snagged six boards from her guard position. Trinder led the team with five assists, one more than Maite Cazorla.
FAST HANDS: Moore had a team-high four steals in the game, including her two in the final 75 seconds of the game.
UP NEXT: The Ducks leave Amsterdam on Friday and fly to Barcelona, where they will play twice on Saturday and once on Sunday.
