T&F Preview: Women's Throws
01/11/17 | Track and Field
Breaking down the Oregon track and field program by event groups entering the start of the indoor season (Jan. 14)
Head Coach Robert Johnson: "This group may not be as big as the others, but there is no shortage of talent here. After watching their progression through fall training, it will be exciting to see how it translates in competition. It will also be exciting to see what our four freshmen bring to the table this season after successful high school careers."
SHOT PUT, WEIGHT THROW, HAMMER/DISCUS (OUTDOORS)
Who's back: Madeline Middlebrooks returns as a redshirt junior after competing in the weight throw last year during indoors and the hammer throw outdoors. Middlebrooks placed fourth in the hammer at last year's Pac-12 Championships (189-5/57.73m), and took part in the weight throw at the MPSF Championships. She was also a two-time finalist in both the shot put and the discus while in high school.
Who's new: The Women of Oregon welcome a redshirt freshman along with two true freshmen to the fold in 2017. Ronna Stone will make her Oregon debut after redshirting last season, bringing with her an impressive high school resume. Stone won the California state title in the discus as a senior with a career-best throw of 161-9 (49.3m), and also placed eighth in the shot put.
Joining Stone are freshmen Maddie Rabing and Kiana Phelps. Phelps was a two-time state champion in the discus for Kingley-Pierson in Iowa, and also won the state title in the shot put in 2016 and was the runner-up in 2015. She set the Iowa state record in the discus with an impressive throw of 172-1 (52.45m) to win the 2016 discus state title, and extended that mark to 172-7 at the Senior Spotlight All-Star Meet. Phelps also competed in the discus at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships, coming away with a fifth-place finish.
Rabing was a standout in the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin while at Lakeridge High School in Oregon. She was a three-time state champion in the shot put, claiming the title at the OSAA 6A State Championships her final three years, and also won the discus title as a junior in 2015 has two other top-three state finishes in the discus under her belt. Rabing also has experience in both the weight throw and the shot put indoors.
JAVELIN (OUTDOORS)
Who's back: Annie Whitfield enters her redshirt senior season as the only returner for the Ducks in the javelin. Whitfield placed sixth at last year's Pac-12 Championships (140-4/42.77m), and owns a career-best throw of 148-5 (45.24m).
Who's new: Alexis Rigmaiden joins the Ducks as a freshman after a strong high school career at St. Louis Catholic High School in Louisiana. Rigmaiden claimed the javelin title as a junior at the LHSAA Class 3A-4A-5A State Outdoor Championships, and followed that up as a senior by winning the javelin at the 2016 LHSAA 3A State Outdoor Championships (146-8/44.7m). She owns a career-best mark in the javelin of 157-1 (47.87m). Rigmaiden also took second in the state in both the shot put and the discus as a senior at the Outdoor Championships, and placed third in the shot put at the 2016 LHSAA Division 2 Indoor State Championships.
