Postgame Quotes - Oregon State
01/14/17 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman, Head Coach
On tonight's performance...
"We want to continue getting better. I think we are still behind some teams in the league and nationally. This was a great opportunity for Kavell (Bigby-Williams) to get some ball game, we spread the minutes around."
On the upcoming schedule...
"There are some quirks in the schedule this year. We have our work cut out for us; we have Cal coming in here with three straight wins, Stanford has their heads back up. We're going to face a lot of good teams with a lot of momentum. We're going to have to be ready to go."
On maintaining a large lead..
"Yeah, it is an odd situation. You just want to get better. It is different; there's not pressure to make a play, but, again, what I told our guys at the half, we just want to get better. There are a lot of new things to work on and we're trying some different things."
On getting comfortable in conference play...
"They better not. I mean, we've been at home for three games. The schedule for next week works against us. I hope they are not getting comfortable. I told them afterwards...be ready to practice on Monday."
Casey Benson, Junior Guard
On what was working early to go on the 21-0 run...
"Just got into a rhythm offensively and defensively, making it tough on them. I think it took them nine or 10 minutes to score we let that fuel us to get going."
On shutting down Eubanks...
"He might have been their leading scorer, or top two, and we knew that they were going to go to him and our bigs did a really good job of making it tough on him and then we got some really good traps where he turned it over and that let us get some easy baskets, so pretty good defensive effort."
On Charlie Noebel hitting a three...
"It was awesome to see Charlie get in there. He is such a great kid and cares so much about the team and it's fun to see him score."
On how this compares to previous Oregon teams and the potential that this team has moving forward...
"We just continue to get better this year. Earlier this year we has some slip-ups obviously, so just focusing, getting better every single practice, every single game. I think we still have a chance to be really really good and to grow. We just got to continue to get better and work and make each other better."
On the areas that they can improve...
"Defensively, rebounding is key for us. Just continue to be unselfish. I think tonight almost every basket we had was assisted it seemed like. So that was huge for us."
Payton Pritchard, Freshman Guard
On what was working early to go on the 21-0 run...
"Defense. When we start our going hard on defense, locking up, that's going to happen for us."
On playing while being up so much the entire game...
"This week we have been working really hard and focusing. Like I said before, when we focus in, great things will happen like that."
On his first civil war experience...
"Great experience. Growing up in the state, the Civil War is such a big thing in every sport, and just to be a part of that I'm very thankful and grateful."
On if there is steady improvement...
"Yeah just in practice, getting after each other, and obviously Chris (Boucher), Jordan (Bell), and Kavell (Bigby-Williams) are always going to block shots and they're the anchor of our defense, but I think us guards are getting better too, pressuring and eliminating easy shots from the outside."
Wayne Tinkle, Oregon State Head Coach
On what it would've taken to get a win tonight…
"A lot better of an effort than what we had here tonight. We knew what we were coming into, this is a big time environment and a big time stage and unfortunately we didn't step up to it."
On his players' mindset coming into this game…
"I think we were nervous. They came out and got physical with us and we had a couple of guys that didn't know how to respond to their physicality."
On what he tells his players during games like this…
"We try to keep them focused on the simple things. The last thing we said before we left the locker room to start the game was to stay poised and stay in character and unfortunately we didn't do that, we panicked a little bit and we went away from things that we've been working on since day one."
On their attitude as a team going forward…
"We have to stay positive. We're going through some adversity and we have to find out who our soldiers are moving forward. I was proud of Drew's (Eubanks) effort and
the way he kept his head when he could've lost it a little bit, so we definitely know that he's a guy that's part of the solution going forward."
