Sweet 16! Ducks Extend Record Win Streak
01/21/17 | Men's Basketball
The Oregon men beat Stanford on Saturday, 69-52, for their school-record 16th consecutive victory.
EUGENE, Ore. —The No. 11 Oregon men made history Saturday afternoon, winning their school-record 16th straight game, a 69-52 victory over Stanford before a sellout crowd of 12,364 in Matthew Knight Arena. The 17-point margin of the victory was the Ducks' smallest in their last six games, in which their average margin of victory has been 24.
How It Happened: The Ducks (18-2, 7-0 Pac-12) led for all but the first couple minutes, using an 11-0 run to take the lead for good after Stanford (11-9, 3-5) scored the first five points. With Dillon Brooks sidelined by the foot injury he suffered Thursday, Oregon spread the offense around Saturday, getting its first five field goals from the five different starters, the last a three-pointer by Dylan Ennis to make it 14-7.
Casey Benson made his sixth straight three-pointer, across two games, for a 25-16 lead, sparking a 7-0 run by Oregon that ended with a nifty Tyler Dorsey putback of his own miss. The Ducks held Stanford without a field goal during that stretch, which lasted 4:27, then denied the Cardinal a made basket over the final 5:14 of the half. Chris Boucher made a three-pointer to cap a 9-0 run for a 40-20 lead, before Stanford made two free throws to go into the break down 40-22.
Oregon's defense helped the Ducks continue to lengthen the lead after halftime. Stanford scored on four of its first five possessions to get within 45-30, but the Cardinal then went another 8:03 without a field goal. During that stretch, Payton Pritchard hit a three-pointer for a 55-32 lead, Oregon's largest to that point. The Ducks eventually led by as many as 25, at 64-39 after a Dorsey three-pointer.
Who Stood Out: Oregon's defense was the standout, as the Ducks held a Pac-12 opponent under .333 shooting for the third time this season. Stanford finished 20-of-62 (.323), and the UO men had a 40-29 edge on the boards. Boucher led the Ducks with 16 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double this season, and Ennis added 15 points. Pritchard had a well-rounded game with six points, seven assists and a career-high eight rebounds.
What It Means: The Ducks set a school record with their 16th straight win, did so despite the absence of their preseason all-American Brooks, and kept pace with Arizona atop the Pac-12 Conference. Not a bad afternoon in Matthew Knight Arena.
Quotable:
Dana Altman, head coach
On his thoughts overall
"Second half, the turnovers took away from what should have been a good performance for us. So it's not the step we wanted to take. I explained to the guys, it's Jan. 21, and we want to be taking steps in the right direction. And we didn't take a positive step today, so I'm disappointed."
On Brooks' diagnosis of a sprained foot
"You never know what's going to happen. But hopefully it'll all work out and he'll feel better here quickly."
Payton Pritchard, freshman guard
On Oregon's defensive keys
"We've got the best shot blockers in the country with Jordan and Chris and Kavell. Us guards, we really have to pressure them and take away easy threes, and easy little 15-footers. If we do that, the rest will take care of itself."
On winning 16 games in a row
"We're not worried about any streak. We're worried about one game at time, getting better each game. We want to make a run in the Pac-12 tournament, and the NCAA tournament."
On playing without Dillon Brooks
"It's gonna hurt; Dillon is our leader, our best player — the best player in the country to me. We've got to find ways to make up for that. Dillon brings that toughness, and that's a big part of what we need to make up for."
Notable: Brooks has been diagnosed with a sprained foot, the Ducks announced early Saturday afternoon, a positive development given initial concerns of an injury similar to the one that required offseason surgery and delayed his debut this season. … Brooks watched Saturday's game in street clothes with transfer Paul White and freshman M.J. Cage, who remains on track to redshirt this season. … The Ducks went 11-of-25 from three-point range, their fifth straight game with 10 or more. ... The Feb. 4 Arizona game has been set for a 1 p.m. tip (ESPN). ... Saturday's sell out was the fourth of the season.
Up Next: The Ducks go on the road to play at Utah on Thursday (7:30 p.m., FS1).
