Another Competitive Civil War Goes To OSU
01/29/17 | Women's Basketball
For the second time in three days, Oregon fought back from a double-digit deficit to lead in the fourth quarter before falling to the Beavers.
CORVALLIS — The Oregon women's basketball team demonstrated for the second time in three days that it can contend with reigning Final Four participant Oregon State, but the No. 11 Beavers managed to extend their Civil War win streak yet again Sunday, winning their 13th straight over the Ducks, 67-60, before 6,005 in Gill Coliseum.
How It Happened: The second Civil War game in less than 48 hours played out in similar fashion to Friday's loss for the Ducks (14-8, 4-6 Pac-12) in Eugene. The Beavers (20-2, 9-1) went ahead by double digits in the third quarter, Oregon clawed back to lead briefly in the fourth but OSU star Sydney Wiese hit a back-breaking three-pointer down the stretch — all of which mirrored Friday's game.
Sunday's matinee wasn't quite as defensive, and Oregon led 17-15 after one quarter before trailing 31-25 at the half. The Beavers then scored on their first two possessions of the second half, to go up 35-25. But the Ducks, led by outstanding freshman Sabrina Ionescu, fought back into the game, with Ionescu hitting a three-pointer and then a left-handed runner to cap a 10-2 run and knot the score 40-40.
Ionescu, who finished with 21 points, hit another three-pointer for a 49-45 lead in the fourth quarter, and Lexi Bando's first points capped an 11-1 run for a 51-45 advantage. But the Beavers had another spurt in them, mounting a 17-7 run that included 11 points from Wiese. She hit three three-pointers during the run, the last a dagger for a 62-58 lead with 1:31 left.
Who Stood Out: Ionescu made 8-of-16 shots, including 4-of-7 three-pointers, on her way to the 21 points. She grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double, and dished out five assists. Maite Cazorla added eight points with six assists, and again was assigned with defending Wiese, who was quiet most of the afternoon before her late outburst. Mallory McGwire added 12 points, including three of her trademark jumpers from the elbow on three straight possessions in the third quarter.
What It Means: There are no moral victories, but the Ducks for the second game in a row seemed optimistic about their hopes for the future — both the short-term and long-term — after another gritty performance against what has been in recent years a regional powerhouse.

Kelly Graves, head coach
On his thoughts overall
"We played really, really hard. I thought defensively we grew up a lot this week — not just today but this week. Oregon State, they test everything about you, and I think even though we lost two games to them, again, proud of the effort. I think we got a lot better; we still have a ways to go."
On Wiese's big plays down the stretch
"She made some shots tonight that were closely guard, and still made them. That's a real testament to a great player. Hats off to them. But again, I'm proud of this young team. And our future is bright. … I think we should take solace in the fact we can play with the best. We went toe-to-toe with a legitimate top-10 team twice. And it's not a fluke."
Sabrina Ionescu, freshman guard
On her takeaways from the Civil War
"I think we saw our potential this weekend. I think now we know what we're capable of — down the line (this season), next year and the years after."
Notable: Ionescu's 21 points were her most in Pac-12 play this season. She scored a season-high 26 against Texas-San Antonio during nonconference play. … Oregon's 60 points were the second-most surrendered by Oregon State in a conference game this season. … The Ducks were outrebounded 28-12 in the first half, going without a single offensive rebound and thus a single second-chance point. In the second half, Oregon was outrebounded just 18-17, grabbing five offensive rebounds and scoring eight second-chance points.
Up Next: The Ducks remain on the road when they play at Arizona on Friday (5 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
