Ducks fall in East Lake Cup semifinals

ATLANTA – Oregon dropped its Final Four rematch with Vanderbilt, 4-1, in the semifinal of the East Lake Cup on Tuesday at East Lake Golf Club.
How it Happened: Norman Xiong secured the only point of the day for the Ducks with a 6&4 win over Harrison Ott. Xiong had a two-hole lead heading into the back nine before winning four of the next five holes to finish off a dominant victory.
The two freshmen in the Oregon lineup, Donald Kay and Thomas Mulligan, both dropped their matches but showed grit coming down the stretch in their first taste of collegiate match play.
Kay was locked in a battle all day long with John Augenstein and had a clutch up-and-down on the 16th hole to remain only one hole down. Mulligan drained a long birdie putt on No. 14 to halve the hole but lost the 16th hole when Theo Humphrey sank a birdie putt to clinch the win for the Commodores.
Edwin Yi led off the day for Oregon but struggled early on the front nine and could never recover, going five holes down through 10 holes, losing 4&3 to Will Gordon.
Ryan Gronlund lost his match 2&1 after he also started a bit slow out of the gates, finding himself three holes down after eight holes before picking up a win on hole nine.

On if he thought the team performed better today…
"Absolutely. We have two freshman playing here and one of them who is from Ireland who has never played in Bermuda really. So he is got a learning curve, and he did great today, he just got beat by Theo Humphrey, who made five birdies in the final seven holes. So you know you're going to get beat when that happens. But a lot of positives, and I left today feel encouraged."
Norman Xiong, Sophomore
On his play today…
"I didn't feel great on the range and still didn't feel that sharp and I made one par putt on hole three, and that kept me in it and then found my swing on [hole] four and from there, I started playing the golf that I'm used to, and I definitely hit a lot better shots. More controlled and a lot less dispersion, so that really helped throughout the round."
