Oregon sophomores Justin Herbert and Calvin Throckmorton are candidates for academic all-America honors after being named to CoSIDA's District 8 all-academic team.
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon sophomores Justin Herbert and Calvin Throckmorton were named Thursday to the CoSIDA District 8 all-academic team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Herbert, a quarterback from Eugene, has a 4.08 grade-point average in biology. Throckmorton, an offensive lineman from Bellevue, Wash., has a 3.76 grade-point average in human physiology.
The CoSIDA all-academic teams are selected based on performance both in the classroom and on the field. First-team all-district selections advance to the ballot for the academic all-America teams to be announced in December.
A seven-game starter as a true freshman last season, Herbert got the Ducks off to a 4-1 start this fall before being sidelined by a collar bone injury. Entering Saturday's home game against Arizona (4:15 p.m., Pac-12 Network), he is 86-of-126 passing (68.2 percent) for 1,264 yards this season, with nine touchdowns and two interceptions.
At the time of his injury, Herbert had a quarterback rating of 172.2. That would rank fourth in the FBS currently, if he had enough attempts to qualify.
Throckmorton has started all 22 games over the last two seasons at right tackle. He received honorable mention on the 2016 all-Pac-12 team as a redshirt freshman, and was named first-team Pac-12 all-academic. This season, he was named to the Pro Football Focus Pac-12 team of the week for his efforts in Oregon's game at Stanford.
Entering Saturday's game against Arizona, Throckmorton and the rest of the UO offensive line have paved the way for the Ducks to rush for 255.20 yards per game, second-most in the Pac-12. The Ducks have allowed 19 sacks, ranking fifth in the conference.
