Three players scored in double figures as the Ducks defeated Westmont on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 11 ranked Oregon women's basketball team defeated Westmont, 71-32, on Sunday afternoon in its final exhibition tuneup prior to the 2017-18 season.
How it Happened: The Ducks kept Westmont scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Sophomore Mallory McGwire kicked things off with a layup on perfect pass from fellow sophomore Sabrina Ionescu. Oregon grabbed multiple offensive rebounds, which led to Lexi Bando's first three-pointer of the game. The Ducks pulled away and held the Warriors to only eight points to Oregon's 17 in the first quarter. Freshman Satou Sabally led the team in the first half, going 3-for-5 and scoring nine points while Hall followed closely behind with eight points and was 2-for-3 from the arc. Ionescu made three steals and grabbed two boards. As a team, the Ducks forced 16 turnovers and scored 19 of their 31 points off turnovers in the first half.
Senior Lexi Bando kicked off the third quarter with a three-point bucket from the corner. The Ducks' defense pressured the Warriors into two shot clock violations in the third quarter. Bando closed out the quarter with back-to-back baskets and an assist to junior Oti Gildon. Bando drew a foul with three seconds left in the third and left Oregon with a comfortable 23-point lead.
Both teams had a slow start in the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman Lydia Giomi drew a foul, but Sierra Campisano stole the ball right back. Giomi grabbed an offensive board and tipped it in for her first basket of the game. Oregon's defense shined in the fourth quarter, capping off the win by keeping the Warriors scoreless for all but one minute of the fourth quarter. Aina Ayuso ended the game with two more points off free throws, and the Ducks finished with a 39-point victory at 71-32.
Taking Charge: Oregon's defense forced 28 turnovers, gaining 35 of their 71 points off Westmont's miscues. Ionescu led the defense and finished the day with a team-high four steals. Sophomore Sierra Campisano was close behind with three. Hall noted that she has been focusing on defense during the offseason. "For my team, I worked on defense especially," she said. "I want to be able to contribute as much as possible and be a solid, consistent player, but especially a defensive stopper."
Displaying Depth: 11 Ducks saw the floor against the Warriors, three having double-digit points. Every player who entered the game put up points, with 33 points coming off the bench. "We had a chance to play everyone for significant minutes; 11 players, double-digit minutes," said head coach Kelly Graves. "Everybody got a chance to get some of the rust off, which is always a positive."
Up next: The Ducks begin their regular season at home, facing the Cal State Northridge Matadors at 5 PM this Friday. "We play a good team right off the bat," Graves said. "Cal State Northridge was picked second in their league. They have an elite post player who was invited to the U23 tryouts last year with Sabrina and Erin (Boley). We've got to be on our game. I think we'll be ready. I think our kids are itching to go. They're a tough team. It's here!"
