Ionescu Matches Program Assist Record in Win vs. Weber State
12/02/17 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 10 Oregon women's basketball team won its fourth straight game, with a 114-87 victory over Weber State on Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks exploded for a program-record 44 points in the third quarter to put the Wildcats away. The previous record was 38 points in the third quarter against Portland State on Dec. 17, 2015.
"We got hot," Sabrina Ionescu said. "We kind of got on a roll there at the end of the first quarter and into the second quarter, and I think that just sparked that whole game for us. I think everyone was confident in shooting the ball tonight and they did. We all scored inside well and we all scored outside well. It was a great night offensively for us."
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks started the game on an 11-0 run before Weber State hit a three-pointer with 6:18 left in the first quarter. Ruthy Hebard appeared to hit a jumper at the first quarter buzzer but it was waived off by the referees and Oregon owned a 21-16 lead going to the second.
Both teams got hot from beyond the three-point line in the second quarter. Oregon and Weber State combined for 13 made threes in the second, led by Lexi Bando, who knocked down five triples. After leading by as much as 11 in the second quarter, the Ducks took a 50-41 lead into the locker room. Ionescu racked up 10 assists in the first half.
Oregon started the third quarter much like it did the first quarter, on a 10-0 run, keyed by a pair of Ionescu three-pointers, to open up a 60-44 lead. Oregon continued to pour it on, scoring a program-record 44 points in the quarter. Oregon's highest-scoring quarter last season was 30 points. In the 44-point third, Oregon shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the floor, with four three-pointers. The Ducks also went 12-of-14 at the free throw line in the quarter.
Oregon owned a 94-67 lead going to the fourth quarter, and with the benches emptied, the Ducks went on to win, 114-87. The 114 points are the most scored by the Ducks this season and the second time UO has reached triple digits.
DISHING DIMES: Ionescu tied the UO single-game record with a career-high 14 assists. She tallied 13 in a game last season as a freshman. Both Corrie Mizusawa (at Gonzaga, Nov. 25, 2003) and Vanessa Selden (vs. New Mexico State, Dec. 7, 1999) also reached 14 assists in a game.
