CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 9 ranked Oregon softball team pulled out another thriller on the first day of the Mary Nutter Classic, defeating Kent State, 4-3.
Oregon (8-0) won both its games on Friday at the Mary Nutter Classic, also beating No. 22 Kentucky earlier in the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Danica Mercado stole second and came around to score when the catcher's throw to second sailed into the outfield. The Ducks added another run in the second on a Lauren Lindvall RBI single to left.
Kent State came storming back in the bottom of the third. The Golden Flashes tallied three runs on three hits and two Oregon errors to take a 3-2 lead.
Oregon, much like in the earlier game against Kentucky, wasted little time coming back. The Ducks scored twice in the fourth to retake the lead. Shannon Rhodes hit into a fielder's choice but Nikki Udria beat out the throw home to score. Later in the frame, Lauren Lindvall popped out to second but freshman Haley Cruse sprinted home and beat the throw.
IN THE CIRCLE: Megan Kleist picked up the win in relief, allowing no runs on three hits in 3.1 innings. Maggie Balint earned her first collegiate save, striking out the side in the seventh.
AT THE PLATE: The Ducks had just four hits against Kent State. Lauren Lindvall had a team-high two RBIs.
