02/19/17 | Baseball
FRESNO, Calif. – Cole Stringer allowed just one run in seven innings while fanning a career-high eight to lead Oregon to a doubleheader split with Fresno State at Bob Bennett Stadium on Saturday.
Stringer (1-0) gave the Ducks (1-2) a much needed boost on the mound in a 13-1 win after the Ducks lost game one 8-3.
Game 1: Fresno State 8, Oregon 3
The Ducks committed a school-record six errors while stranding 11 runners on base in the first game of a doubleheader. The Bulldogs took advantage of the Ducks' poor defense scoring four unearned runs in the win.
How it Happened: The Bulldogs jumped out to a lead in the second inning for the second straight game. FS took advantage of a pair of Ducks' errors to take a 1-0 lead. Oregon rallied for its first lead of the series on a three-run home run by sophomore right fielder Slade Heggen. The homer was the first of Heggen's career.
Fresno State came right back scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning, with one coming as a result of leadoff error. The Bulldogs added four runs in the bottom of the seventh to break the game open.
Game One Box Score Notes: Heggen had his first career three-hit game, while finishing with a career-high three RBI … Heggen, Kyle Kasser and A.J. Balta combined for seven of Oregon's eight hits with Balta and Kasser each finished with two … All eight of Oregon's hits came in the 2-5 spots in the order … Matt Mercer, Zack Noll and Ryne Nelson combined to strike out 11 Bulldogs … Ducks hitters fanned 10 times.
Game 2: Oregon 13, Fresno State 1
Stringer tied a career high pitching seven innings and the Ducks took advantage of 18 walks by Fresno State pitchers to pick up the win.
How it Happened: After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Oregon picked up runs in the third, fourth, seventh and ninth innings en route to the win. UO got on the board with three runs in the fourth to take the lead. After a pair of walks to Balta and Kenyon Yovan, Matthew Dyer singled to load the bases. Morgan McCullough tied the game with a RBI walk, before Daniel Patzlaff delivered a two-run single for a 3-1 lead.
Dyer drove in a run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk to give UO a 4-1 lead, before Patzlaff scored on a double play in the sixth. Oregon added four in the seventh on a bases loaded walk by Patzlaff, a sacrifice fly by Kyle Kasser and a Jake Bennett two-run single. The Ducks got four runs in the ninth to finish the blow out. Kenyon Yovan ripped a bases loaded triple to add three runs after Kasser scored on a wild pitch.
Game Two Box Score Notes: Yovan went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in his first career game. He reached base on his first four at-bats with a single and three walks … Patzlaff was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored … Eleven different Ducks drew walks, including Balta, Yovan and McCullough who had three each … The 18 walks were records for both Oregon and Fresno State … Stringer and senior reliever Connor Zwetsch combined for 11 strikeouts and just two walks … Oregon loaded the bases in four different innings.
More Freshmen: A day after six made their debut as Ducks, more freshmen joined the ranks with playing time. Salem native Gabe Matthews got his first career start at designated hitter in game one and batted seventh. He was joined in the starting lineup by fellow freshmen McCullough, who batted leadoff and played second, and Spencer Steer, who played third and hit eighth. Both Steer and McCullough were in the starting lineup for the season opener. The Ducks turned to two more true freshmen, Noll and Nelson, out of the bullpen in relief of Mercer.
In game two, Oregon started four true freshmen including first-time starters Yovan at designated hitter and catcher Dyer. In game one of the series on Saturday, Dyer made his career debut as a pinch hitter and then played right field. Steer and McCullough started their third straight games.
On Deck: The Ducks and Bulldogs (2-1) will wrap up their four-game series Monday night at Bob Bennett Stadium. Game time is 6:05 p.m.
