Get to know freshman infielder Mia Camusco
As the 2017 softball season starts, get to know the newcomers with a series of Q&As! Next up is Mia Camuso, a freshman infielder from Redding, Calif.
Camuso set five CIF Northern Section records during her high school career with 42 homers, 239 hits, 162 RBIs, 190 runs and 56 doubles. She was a 2015 NFCA high school first team All-American.
Do you have a nickname? Is there a story behind it?
My coaches, teammates, and friends, since I was in eighth grade, have called me Moose. There is not really a story behind it, Moose comes from my last name, Camuso.
When did you start playing softball?
I started playing when I was 5-years-old.
What is your favorite softball memory?
My favorite memory is, in my junior year of high school, hitting a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning for a spot in the playoffs.
Did anyone in your family play softball?
Both my sisters played college softball - Samantha at UCLA and Mandy at Saint Mary's.
Do you have any role models?
My sisters.
Why did you choose Oregon?
I chose Oregon because the atmosphere that the people of Eugene create around athletics is amazing. The fans are so passionate. The facilities are world class and the academic services for athletes are great.
Where do you like to hang out in Eugene?
Anywhere with friends.
Any thoughts on what your major will be?
Something in science.
What have your first couple of quarters in college been like?
The first couple quarters have been lots of hard work and dedication both in the classroom and on the softball field. I have had lots of fun by making friends along the way.
What is it like being on the team?
This team has so many great individuals and coming in as a freshman everyone was nothing but welcoming. The team feels like a family.
What are you most excited about this year?
To show everyone what we can do as a team.
Why did you choose your jersey number?
Both my sisters wore No. 7 number in college.
What is a goal you have for your college career?
Win a national championship. Also, I want to be both an All-American and Academic-All American.
What is a goal you have for after graduation?
To continue my education in graduate school and have eventually have a job in the medical field.
