Ducks Edge Cal For Series Win
03/18/17 | Softball
FRESHMAN MIRANDA ELISH WAS SOLID IN THE CIRCLE AND CONTRIBUTED WITH THE BAT AS WELL TO LEAD NO. 3 OREGON TO A 2-1 VICTORY AND SERIES WIN OVER NO. 23 CAL
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 3 ranked Oregon softball team knocked off No. 23 California, 2-1, to claim game two of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (26-0, 2-0 Pac-12) remain the only undefeated team in the country, and will go for the series-sweep against Cal on Sunday.
How it happened: The Golden Bears (17-7, 0-2 Pac-12) scored a run in the first inning to take a lead with three singles, but were unable to generate much offense after that. A walk and a hit batter got UO starter Miranda Elish (6-0) into a jam in the second, but she used a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Oregon left a few runners on base in the first three innings, but Nikki Udria broke through in the fourth inning with a solo home run to tie the game, 1-1.
Elish and the Oregon defense kept Cal off the board, and the Ducks took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Elish came to the dish to pinch-hit, and doubled to right-center field to get into scoring position. A triple down the right-field line by Danica Mercado brought home pinch-runner Sammie Puentes to give Oregon the 2-1 victory.
In the circle: Elish pitched a complete-game and tallied her sixth win of the season. She struck out seven batters and walked two, and allowed one run on six hits. Her double at the plate added to yet another impressive performance for the freshman righty.
At the plate: Mercado went 2-for-3 on the day and brought home the game-winning RBI with her triple. Udria also finished 2-for-3 and got the Ducks on the board with her solo homer to center field.
Quotable: Head Coach Mike White
On Miranda Elish's first Pac-12 outing…
"I can't say enough about it. She did a nice job, gave up a run in the first inning, but really battled. A lot of times they can get away from you a little bit, but I think she hung in there and then had a great at-bat. It was great, it was awesome."

On getting out of a jam…
"You just have to buckle down. I have the best defense in the country behind me and I just need to trust them, and I did. They made big plays and they helped me out a lot."
On coming to the plate…
"Coach White said to swing a bat, so I was in the bullpen swinging, and I started running back in, and they said, 'hey, you're up to bat' so I ran in and grabbed my bat. I got composed and I did what I needed to do for my team."
Up Next: The Ducks will go for the series-sweep against the Golden Bears on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT at Jane Sanders.
