The No. 3 ranked Oregon softball team improved to a ridiculous 29-0 after taking down Utah, 3-0, in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday night.
SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 3 ranked Oregon softball team defeated Utah, 3-0, on Sunday night in the second game of a doubleheader to clinch the three-game series. The undefeated Ducks go for the sweep of the Utes on Monday.
Oregon is now 29-0, the last undefeated remaining in NCAA softball. Oregon's longest winning streak prior to this was 18 games.
HOW IT HAPPENED: There wasn't much scoring in this one, as Oregon freshman pitcher Maggie Balint and Utah junior pitcher Katie Donovan were in command most of the night.
The Ducks were able to get to Donovan early, however, as Danica Mercado doubled in the first before Gwen Svekis belted her third home run of the season to make it a 2-0 lead for the Ducks.
Oregon also scored in the third when Shannon Rhodes rolled into a fielder's choice grounder with the bases loaded to score Mercado.
IN THE CIRCLE: The three runs of support was more than enough for Balint, as the freshman tossed her second shutout and fifth complete game of the season.
The right-hander allowed no runs on five hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks. On the season, Balint has issued just 13 walks in 70.2 innings pitched with 95 strikeouts.
AT THE DISH: Catcher Gwen Svekis went 2-for-4 to lead the way at the plate for the Ducks. Oregon tallied just four hits in the game but drew five walks against Utah pitcher Katie Donovan, who had issued just 13 walks all season coming into the game.
