Oregon is now 30-0 after defeating No. 25 BYU in a pitcher's duel, 1-0
EUGENE, Ore. – It was a pitcher's duel on Thursday at Jane Sanders Stadium, but the No. 3 ranked Ducks came out on top, 1-0, over No. 25 ranked BYU.
Oregon is now a perfect 30-0 on the season. The longest winning streak to open a season in NCAA history is 35, set by UCLA in 1999.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Offense was in a short supply on Thursday. Oregon did not get a hit until the fourth inning, when Danica Mercado doubled on a bloop to left.
The Ducks finally broke through in the sixth. Alexis Mack reached on a one-out error and moved to second when Mercado dropped down a bunt single. After a strikeout, Nikki Udria came up and lined a full-count single to right to score Mack from second.
QUOTABLE: Nikki Udria on facing a strong pitcher "I think it's definitely a benefit for us because we have a younger team and its kind of like a super regional feel. It's good to see a quality pitcher and have to make some adjustments."
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshmen RHPs Miranda Elish and Maggie Balint combined to toss a shutout against BYU. Elish started the game and allowed five hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Coming on in the sixth, Balint struck out all five batters she faced. Balint picked up the victory, improving to 14-0. BYU's McKenna Bull was also fantastic, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.
AT THE DISH: The Ducks had just three hits in the game and Danica Mercado had two of them. Nikki Udria's RBI single in the sixth was Oregon's third hit.
UP NEXT: No. 3 Oregon meets No. 21 Arizona State for a three-game Pac-12 series starting tomorrow at Jane Sanders Stadium.
