Brooks Named One of Five Finalists for Erving Award
03/08/17 | Men's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The honors keep coming for junior forward Dillon Brooks.
Two days after he was named Pac-12 Player of the Year, Brooks was selected as one of five finalists for the 2017 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
Brooks was joined on the ballot by Josh Hart of Villanova, Josh Jackson of Kansas, Justin Jackson of North Carolina and Jayson Tatum of Duke.
Brooks, who missed the first three games of the year recovering from off-season foot surgery, leads the Ducks in scoring at 16.0 points per game, which ranks ninth in the Pac-12.
The Mississauga, Ontario, native has displayed a penchant for big moments, having hit three game-winning shots this season – Dec. 28 in Oregon's Pac-12 opener against UCLA, at California on Feb. 22 and in overtime against Tennessee in the Maui Invitational in November. Brooks also scored the Ducks' final 12 points in a one-point win over Arizona State on Feb. 4.
In recent days, Brooks has been named a first team all-American by USA Today, second-team by The Sporting News, and third-team by NBC Sports. He is also one of 15 finalists on the ballot for the Wooden Award.
Brooks and the Ducks return to action Thursday as the No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament, against either Stanford or Arizona State in a quarterfinal game beginning at noon in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Named after Hall of Famer and 11-time NBA All-Star Julius Erving, the annual honor in its third year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel narrowed the original watch list of 20 candidates down to 10 and now the final five.
"As a small forward who dominated at every level of the game, Julius 'Dr. J' Erving is an icon," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "To be nominated for this award is a special honor in and of itself and we look forward to watching these remarkable student athletes down the stretch."
The winner of the 2017 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans are encouraged to visit www.HoophallAwards.com to cast their votes March 10-24.
The 2017 Julius Erving Award will be presented at ESPN's College Basketball Awards, presented by Wendy's, live from The Novo by Microsoft in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, April 7, 2017. The Awards will be televised live on ESPN2.
Previous winners of the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award include Denzel Valentine, Michigan State (2016) and Stanley Johnson, Arizona (2015).
