REDSHIRT SENIOR KYREE KING ENJOYED A HOMECOMING AT THE MT. SAC RELAYS WITH WINS IN THE 100 AND 200 METERS, AND FRESHMAN PHENOM KATIE RAINSBERGER SET AN NCAA-LEADING TIME IN THE 1,500 METERS
The Oregon track and field team enjoyed a loaded day of events on Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Beach Invitational, with Kyree King headlining the day with wins in the 100 and 200 meters in a homecoming for the redshirt senior at Mt. SAC.
How it Happened - Mt. SAC Relays: King, a native of Ontario, Calif., endured a bit of a strange start to what turned out to be a tremendously successful day. In the men's open 100 meters, King initially finished second in 10.35 seconds after multiple false starts in the heat and a lot of confusion on the track. The race was re-run, and King came out on top with an improved time of 10.27. King would come back just a couple hours later to win the 200 meters in 20.78, with senior Marcus Chambers finishing second in 21.13.
Freshman phenom Katie Rainsberger made headlines for the Women of Oregon, finishing second in the invite 1,500 meters in 4:13.25, a new NCAA-leading time.
Freshman Makenzie Dunmore, who was a part of two collegiate record-setting relays for the Ducks two weeks ago at the Florida Relays, was tremendous in her first individual outdoor action as a collegiate. Dunmore won the women's open 200 meters in a personal-best 23.24, good for ninth in UO history. Fellow freshman Hannah Waller enjoyed a great 400 meter opener early in the day, winning her heat in 53.13. Cameron Stone ran 47.84 in the men's 400.
In the 400 hurdles, Kylee O'Connor ran a new PR in 1:01.89, and freshman Jonathan Harvey also hit a PR in 53.55.
In the throws, Cullen Prena won the men's open discus with a new PR throw of 54.61m/179'2", and freshman Sebastian Barajas took eighth at 50.98m/167'3". For the Women of Oregon, freshman Kiana Phelps also enjoyed a strong showing in the discus, taking second in the women's open with a top throw of 49.86m/163'7".
How it Happened - Bryan Clay Invite: A handful of distance runners were in action for the Ducks in the 1,500 meters in Azusa, Calif. Sam Prakel finished seventh in the men's 1,500 in a solid time of 3:40.87, with freshman Austin Tamagno ninth in 3:41.33. Blake Haney also ran well in 3:42.86, and redshirt senior Tim Gorman hit a PR in 3:43.31.
For the Women of Oregon, Jessica Hull led the Ducks in the 1,500 with a PR time of 4:17.76. Emma Abrahamson (4:18.32) and Samantha Nadel (4:18.75) hit PRs as well while finishing together, and Kelly O'Neill also finished in a career-best time of 4:26.70.
How it Happened - Beach Invite: Four throwers competed for the Ducks on Friday at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. John Nizich finished eighth in the men's javelin, third among collegians, with a season-best toss of 68.80m/225'9". Freshman Max Lydum competed in the hammer throw with a top throw of 58.00m/190'3", and Madeline Middlebrooks threw 52.60m/172'7" in the women's hammer.
Notable: King's winning time in the 100 meters of 10.27 slots into seventh in UO history, while his 20.78 to win the 200 is also good for seventh … Rainsberger's 4:13.25 slots into seventh on the Oregon women's all-time list.
Up Next: The Ducks will be back at it on Saturday with another hectic day between the three meets in California.
