In a pitchers' duel in the desert, the Ducks lost, 2-0, to Arizona to open a three-game series.
TUCSON, Ariz. – In a battle of two of the top pitching staffs in the NCAA, No. 6 Oregon dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 3 Arizona on Friday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Ducks (37-5, 10-5 Pac-12) did not score on five hits with one error. The Wildcats (44-3, 14-2) tallied two runs on seven hits with two errors.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arizona got on the board first when an Oregon error allowed for an unearned run to score. With runners at first and third and one out, Oregon starter Megan Kleist worked out of the jam to limit the Wildcats to just one run.
Oregon tallied two out hits in the first and second but the Ducks were sat down in order in the third and fourth innings. Oregon got something going in the fifth when Mia Camuso beat out an infield single to start the inning. In the next at-bat, Shannon Rhodes reached on an error but Camuso was thrown out trying to reach third on the miscue.
Arizona pushed its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when slugger Katiyana Mauga hit a solo homer to left.
The Ducks had a scoring opportunity in the sixth. Danica Mercado laced a double to left and moved to third when Gwen Svekis beat out an infield single, giving UO runners at the corners with one out. Nikki Udria followed with a walk to load the bases. An infield grounder and a foul out to third ended the threat without a run for the Ducks.
IN THE CIRCLE: Against an imposing UA lineup, sophomore Megan Kleist was fantastic, allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk in six innings with seven strikeouts. Arizona ace Danielle O'Toole, who ranks sixth in the NCAA with a 0.80 ERA, allowed no runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
AT THE DISH: Catcher Gwen Svekis had a couple singles for the Ducks while Danica Mercado, Mia Camuso and Shannon Rhodes also had hits on Friday night. Nikki Udria drew a walk to reach base for the 36th straight game. Udria has failed to get on base in just one game all season.
