EUGENE, Ore. - Freshman Mia Camuso belted a walkoff grand slam in the fifth and the Ducks run-ruled Oregon State, 8-0, on Friday to open the three-game Civil War series at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (39-6, 12-6 Pac-12) tallied eight runs on nine hits with no errors while the Beavers (24-20, 6-10) did not score on three hits with no errors.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Both pitchers dominated early, as neither team scored through the first three innings. Oregon broke through, however, with a big four-run fourth inning.
Gwen Svekis started the fourth with a solo shot to right center to put the Ducks up 1-0. Later in the inning, freshman Shannon Rhodes dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Nikki Udria from third. Madi Bishop followed with a two-run double to put the Ducks up, 4-0, over the rival Beavers.
One inning later, in the fifth, the Ducks ended the game with four more runs on just one swing. Svekis was hit by a pitch to put a runner at first with one out. Udria and Lauren Lindvall then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Camuso came up and crushed the third pitch she saw over the fence in center to make it an 8-0 lead for the Ducks and end the game via run-rule.
"The first three innings, nothing was happening," said head coach Mike White. "We weren't doing very well and (OSU's) Taylor Cotton was pitching very well, but all of a sudden the floodgates opened. That was pretty good."
IN THE CIRCLE: Sophomore Megan Kleist was outstanding, allowing no runs on three hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked none in earning her sixth shutout of the season. Kleist is now 15-3 on the season with a 1.38 ERA.
AT THE PLATE: Nikki Udria and Mia Camuso each had two hits to lead the Ducks. Udria has now reached base safely in 39 straight games. Udria also stole a base, giving the Ducks a Pac-12-leading 66 this season.
HOME RUN POWER: Oregon's bats have come alive as of late. The Ducks have hit eight home runs in the last three games, including three by junior Gwen Svekis.
