DUCKS TIED FOR THIRD AT 2-OVER AFTER FIRST DAY OF SILVERADO SHOWDOWN BEHIND KATHLEEN SCAVO'S SEASON-LOW 69 (-3, T5)
NAPA, Calif. - Kathleen Scavo's season-low 69 headlined an overall solid first round of the Silverado Showdown for the Oregon women's golf team on Sunday afternoon at the Silverado Country Club.
The Ducks (290, +2) sit in a tie for third place overall in the 18-team field after the first 18 holes. No. 3 Stanford leads at 5-under, with No. 6 UCLA one stroke back in second place.
How it Happened: Scavo, the Ducks' season-leader in scoring average entering Sunday (74.73), was on her game from the get-go. The sophomore made par on her first seven holes before carding a bogey on No. 8, but she rebounded with three-straight birdies to dip to 2-under. Scavo made par on the next six holes before making a birdie on No. 18 to finish round one with a season-low 69 and in a tie for fifth overall at 3-under.
Gonzaga's Biance Pagdanganan leads the field at 5-under, and Scavo is one of 14 players under par after the first day.
Junior Kelsey Ulep also put together a strong start for Oregon, shooting an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 15th entering Monday's second round. Ulep was 1-under on the back nine to finish as one of 20 players in the field at or below par.
Senior Marcella Pranovia got Sunday's opening round off to a good start, shooting 2-under across her first nine holes after back-to-back birdies to start the day. Pranovia was 4-over on the back nine to end the first round 2-over (74) and tied for 31st.
Senior Cathleen Santoso and sophomore Petra Salko rounded out the Oregon lineup, with both wrapping the day at 3-over in a tie for 39th. Santoso, the tournement's defending champion, was 1-over on the front nine, while Salko shot even-par on the back nine.
What it Means: The Ducks, who won the 2015 Silverado Showdown and have finished in the top five each of the last three years, rebounded nicely from a 13th-place finish at last week's Bryan National Collegiate to start the tournament with a consistent showing across the board.
Notable: The Ducks led the 18-team field in birdies in the first round with 18 … Oregon finished the first day with the second-best score in the field on par-5 holes at 4-under … Scavo was -2 on par-5 holes, while Ulep was -2 on par-4 holes … Pranovia's five birdies led Oregon and were the third-most in the field.
Up Next: The Ducks enter Monday's second round seven strokes behind first-place Stanford.
