Eugene, Ore. – Junior pitcher David Peterson has been named one of 25 semifinalists for the 40th USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award. The award is given to the top amateur baseball player in the United States and is presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation.
The Ducks' lefty finished the season 11-4 with a 2.51 ERA with a school-record 140 strikeouts in 100.1 innings pitched while walking just 15. He is the only pitcher in the country to rank in the top seven in four statistical categories. He is second in the nation in both strikeouts and victories, while ranking fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.33) and seventh in strikeouts per nine innings (12.56).
Peterson (Denver, Colo. / Regis Jesuit HS) had a dominant season. In addition to being a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, the junior is also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy which honors collegiate baseball's best player. During the season, he was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month after finishing March with a 5-0 record and a 0.50 ERA. He allowed just four runs, two earned, on 28 hits in 36.1 innings pitched while striking out 57, walking two and allowing a .207 opponent batting average. Peterson had three games with double-digit strikeouts during the month with a then career-high 17 against Mississippi State on March 3, 14 the next week against Santa Clara and then 11 to wrap up March against Utah.
Oregon's ace also has claimed three Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in 2017 and was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week three times. He was selected the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week after he set a career-high, and Oregon record, striking out 20 in a 2-0 complete-game shutout of Arizona State on April 28. In that game he allowed just four hits while walking just one.
Peterson had six double-digit strikeout games during the season. In addition to the Arizona State, Mississippi State, Santa Clara and Utah games, he fanned 11 vs. UC Irvine while walking none and had 10 strikeouts in a win at Washington State.
Peterson is the fourth Duck to earn Golden Spikes semifinalist recognition. Tyler Anderson was a semifinalist in 2011, while Jimmie Sherfy was on the list in both 2012 and 2013. Finalists for the award will be announced on Wednesday, June 14.
