How it Happened: Modin and Delgado kicked off the decathlon on Saturday in Corvallis with the first five events. Modin's opening day was highlighted by a pair of second-place finishes in the long jump 23-0.75/7.03m) and the high jump (6-4.25/1.94m), while Delgado came away with a first-place finish in the shot put (42-8.75/13.03m).
Modin wrapped the first day of competition in second place in the eight-man field with 3,986 points, while Delgado sat in fifth with 3,702 points.
After middle-of-the-pack finishes in the 110-meter hurdles to kick off Sunday, Modin and Delgado went 1-2 in the discus to begin their final push up the leaderboard, with Modin reaching 124-7.50/37.99m and Delgado hitting 122-3.5/37.28m.
Modin tied for the win in the pole vault at 15-5/4.70m to take over the overall lead, and then he threw a lifetime best 197-0/60.05m to win the javelin and take a commanding lead in the overall standings with one event remaining. Delgado also hit a lifetime best at 181-6.25/55.33m to take second.
In the 1,500 meters, the final event of the decathlon, Delgado came away with a huge PR in 4:14.75 to win the race and vault himself into second place and give the Ducks the 1-2 sweep.
What it Means: Modin and Delgado's 18 points before the Pac-12 Championships even arrive in Eugene is a welcome sight for the Men of Oregon, who are looking to continue their dominance of the Pac-12 that has lasted for a decade. In winning his first-career Pac-12 championship, Modin became the 18th Duck all-time to win a conference title in the decathlon and the first since Dakotah Keys in 2014. Modin and Delgado are now both in solid qualifying position for the NCAA Championships in Eugene (June 7-10).When two of your @OregonTF athletes podium at #Pac12TF Champs, what *else* do you do other than interview them yourself, right @Run4Ducks? ?? pic.twitter.com/4HG38cqFuD
