OREGON IS ONE STROKE OFF THE TEAM LEAD AT 6 OVER AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF THE LUBBOCK REGIONAL, AND SENIOR CATHLEEN SANTOSO IS SECOND OVERALL AFTER A 3-UNDER 69
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Oregon women's golf team got its 10th straight NCAA Regional off to a strong start on Monday, firing a 6-over 294 to sit in second overall after the first of three rounds at The Rawls Course. Cathleen Santoso is in second on the overall leaderboard after the senior carded a 3-under 69 to kick off the Lubbock Regional.
Seventh-ranked Arizona State leads the 18-school team race with a one-stroke lead over the Ducks at 5 over, and Santoso sits just one stroke behind UCLA's Lilia Vu (-4) after the first 18 holes.
How it Happened: Santoso started her day well at The Rawls Course, where the Ducks played their first fall tournament this season, picking up a birdie on her first hole of the day. After a pair of bogies, Santoso added two more birdies to finish up her first nine holes at 1-under. The Sydney, Australia, native bogied her first whole after the turn before going 3-under across her final eight holes to card a first-round 69.
With Santoso leading the way under par, the rest of the Duck lineup strung together a quality first round. Sophomore Kathleen Scavo sits in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 17th after carding a 2-over 74. Scavo was 2 over on her first nine holes before shooting even across her final nine.
Fellow sophomore Petra Salko finished the opening round just one stroke behind Scavo, and is tied for 26th at 3 over (75). After a 2 over front nine, Salko picked up an eagle on No. 2 to dip below par before finishing with four bogies on her final six holes. Senior Marcella Pranovia and junior Kelsey Ulep round out the Oregon lineup at 4-over par, both in a tie for 36th. Pranovia was 1 over on her first nine holes, and Ulep finished strong with an even-par performance on her final nine.
What it Means: Needing to finish in the top six to advance to their second straight NCAA Championships, the Ducks put together an ideal position to do so after the first round. The Ducks boast an advantage over most of the 18-team field with their experience at The Rawls Course after a third-place finish there in the Red Raider Invitational in September.

On the team's strong start...
"I hope that our team felt this, but I sure felt more confident about the plan out there having played here in the fall. Everyone had some great stretches in their rounds, and we know it will take a total team effort for us to advance. We have always believed that this team can play at a high level, and it is so much fun to watch when we see that they believe it too."
On Santoso…
"Cathleen was rock solid and made so many good putts today. We all know that when she is at her best, she can beat anyone."
Notable: Oregon carded 15 birdies in the first round, fourth-most in the field, with Santoso's six tying for the most in the field … Salko was one of five players to card an eagle in the first round … Santoso was 3 under on par-5 holes and 1 under on par-3 holes … Scavo was 2 under on par-5 holes.
