Men's tennis senior Jayson Amos and track and field senior Maggie Schmaedick have been named Oregon's two Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners, given to each Pac-12 school's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete
EUGENE, Ore. – Men's tennis senior Jayson Amos and senior Maggie Schmaedick of cross country and track and field have been named Oregon's two Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners, the Pac-12 announced on Tuesday.
A conference medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired in 2009 after serving for 26 years as commissioner of the Pac-10.
Amos finished his Oregon career as the program's all-time wins leader with 93 career singles victories, and he is fourth all-time at UO with 68 career doubles wins. He is also one of only two players in program history to have three straight seasons of at least 22 singles wins, and he had at least 20 in each of his four seasons. Amos was also a two-time Pac-12 all-academic second-team recipient while with the Ducks.
Amos played a part in the steady progression of the Oregon men's tennis program, which has risen to among the nation's elite. Amos helped the Ducks reach the NCAA Tournament in three of his four years, including the program's first back-to-back appearances in 2016 and 2017.
Schmaedick has been a steady example on and off the track in her four years with the Ducks. She provided the famous kick to narrowly beat out a Michigan runner at the line at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships to secure a thrilling national title for the Ducks, the first jewel in the historic Triple Crown for the Women of Oregon.
In the classroom, Schmaedick was a three-time Pac-12 track second-team all-academic selection, and also earned second-team Pac-12 all-academic honors for cross country in 2016.
On Thursday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks will feature a one-hour special honoring the 24 Medal winners on its year-end Sports Report.
