Eugene, Ore. – Junior David Peterson has been named a third-team All-American by Baseball America. The Ducks' lefty is the only Duck to earn All-America honors from the magazine in the nine seasons since baseball returned to Oregon.
Peterson (Denver, Colo. / Regis Jesuit HS) finished the season 11-4 with a 2.51 ERA and a school-record 140 strikeouts in 100.1 innings pitched while walking just 15. He is the only pitcher in the country to rank in the top seven in four statistical categories. He finished the regular season second in the nation in both strikeouts and victories, while ranking fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.33) and seventh in strikeouts per nine innings (12.56).
Peterson had a dominant season. In addition to earning Baseball America All-America honors, he was named a first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy honoring the top amateur player and college baseball's best player respectively. Peterson also earned first-team All-Pac-12 Conference recognition.
During the season, he was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Month after finishing March with a 5-0 record and a 0.50 ERA. He allowed just four runs, two earned, on 28 hits in 36.1 innings pitched while striking out 57, walking two and allowing a .207 opponent batting average. Peterson had three games with double-digit strikeouts during the month with a then career-high 17 against Mississippi State on March 3, 14 the next week against Santa Clara and then 11 to wrap up March against Utah.
Oregon's ace also has claimed three Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in 2017 and was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week three times. He was selected the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week after he set a career-high, and Oregon record, striking out 20 in a 2-0 complete-game shutout of Arizona State on April 28. In that game he allowed just four hits while walking just one.
Peterson had six double-digit strikeout games during the season. In addition to the Arizona State, Mississippi State, Santa Clara and Utah games, he fanned 11 vs. UC Irvine while walking none and had 10 strikeouts in a win at Washington State.
