EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon volleyball's Ronika Stone has been named to the 12-player U.S. Women's Junior National Team (WJNT) and will compete at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship, U.S. WJNT head coach Lauria Corbelli announced on Tuesday.
The World Championship event will be staged July 14-23 in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico. The U.S. qualified for the World Championship by winning gold at the 2017 Women's U20 Pan American Cup in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Stone, coming off a stellar freshman season for the Ducks, makes the team as one of two opposite-side hitters after competing on the 16-player training group from July 2-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Stone was an offensive force for the Ducks in 2016, and will look to build on that as a sophomore when the 2017 season begins in August. The San Jose, Calif., native was a Pac-12 all-freshman selection after finishing third in the conference with a .374 hitting percentage. She enjoyed a tremendous finish to the year with double-digit kills in each of her final six matches, including consecutive season-highs in the Ducks' two NCAA Tournament matches.
Stone will be part of what Corbelli called an "offensively dominant" group for the U.S. WJNT when they head to Mexico this week for the World Championship.
