EUGENE, Ore. – Head women's tennis coach Alison Silverio bolstered her coaching staff Friday afternoon announcing the addition of WTA pro and former NCAA National Champion Elizabeth Lumpkin Robinson as an assistant coach.
"I am proud to announce Elizabeth as the new assistant women's tennis coach at the University of Oregon," said Silverio. "Her experience as an NCAA champion, professional tennis player, and successes on and off the court will be advantageous in the development of our student athletes."
This will mark Robinson's first stint as a collegiate coach after spending over five years competing in the WTA and ITF pro tennis circuits. During her professional career she accumulated six pro circuit doubles titles and one singles title earning a career high world ranking of 280 in doubles play.
"The University of Oregon's atmosphere of excellence in academics and athletics provides a special opportunity for developing champions on and off the court," remarked Robinson. "I am excited to elevate our program to new heights and am honored to join our department's mission in providing an outstanding collegiate experience for our student-athletes. I look forward to the daily process of challenging our players to reach goals far beyond their imagination in the classroom, community, and sport. I am especially grateful to Rob Mullens, Eric Roedl, and Coach Silverio for the opportunity to join the Duck Family."
Before turning pro, Robinson was a member of the UCLA women's tennis team for four years (2004-08) captaining the Bruins to their first ever NCAA Championship in 2008 while posting a 24-1 record in singles play. During that same season Robinson was named the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership Award winner for the west region.
A three-time member of the Pac-10 All-Academic Team, Robinson finished her collegiate career with a 67-13 singles record and is currently ranked eighth on the UCLA all-time overall wins list with 101 victories.
Originally from Naperville, Ill. she is the first and only girl in Illinois state history to win four straight state championships and went on to represent the United States in the Junior Fed Cup in La Baule, France.
The upcoming season is the first time Silverio and Robinson will work together, but they certainly are not strangers as the two have been on the court rivals dating back to their juniors' careers. In fact, during the 2007 season it was Silverio who clinched Georgia Tech's NCAA Championship victory 4-2 over UCLA ending Robinson and the Bruins' championship bid in the NCAA Finals.
"Elizabeth possesses a dynamic personality, intellectual prowess, reliability, strong communication skills, and true grit," Silverio continued. "Furthermore, her relentless work ethic and impeccable character will continue to take our program to new heights. She is a winner. Elizabeth, welcome to the Duck family!"
