Oregon assistant coaches Michelle Tumolo and Becca Block helped team USA to their eighth Women's Lacrosse World Cup Gold medal going undefeated in tournament play.
You never forget your first, and for Oregon assistant coaches Michelle Tumolo and Becca Block their first ever appearance in the Women's Lacrosse World Cup could not have been better.
The pair helped guide team USA to their eighth World Cup gold medal in spectacular fashion going undefeated in the tournament and defeating rival Canada in the championship game 10-5.
One of the tournament's leading scorers, USA went into their 10th straight finals appearance outscoring their opponents 125-32 with Tumolo recording 11 goals and adding 17 assists, the second most on the team. Defensively, Block was a consistent presence for the USA backline scooping up nine ground balls and causing two turnovers while adding one goal in USA's quarterfinal game against Israel.
After downing Israel and tournament hosts England in the knockout stages, USA set up a World Cup finals rematch from 2013 against Canada where Tumolo and Block would square off against a familiar face in Katrina Dowd.
The current Oregon lacrosse head coach and former team USA teammate was named Canada's assistant coach this past year. This tournament marked Dowd's first Women's World Cup on the sidelines as opposed to on the field, having won a gold medal in 2013 with team USA.
Dowd, along with head coach Scott Teeter, helped lead Canada to their second straight finals appearance dropping only one game along the way in pool play to team USA 17-3. The Canadian squad nearly shutout New Zealand in the quarterfinals before pulling out an 8-6 overtime victory over Australia to earn a spot in the gold medal game.
The championship game was hotly contested by both sides, but USA managed to take a 5-1 lead heading into halftime. Tumolo nearly added one more before the half with a long-range shot from midfield, but the halftime buzzer sounded just before the ball reached the back of the net.
Canada found some momentum midway through the second half scoring three straight goals to cut the USA lead in half 8-4. That would be as close as Canada would get though as USA weathered the late push to win 10-5.
Tumolo was one of seven USA players to be named to the All-World Team finishing the game with one goal to give her 12 total for the tournament, while Block added one ground ball against Canada.
The All-World Team included USA's Allyson Carey, Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Jennifer Russell, Kayla Treanor, and Devon Wills along with Canada's Dana Dobbie, Katie Donohoe, Erica Evans, England's Laura Merrifield, and Australia's Hannah Nielsen
The three Oregon coaches now return to Eugene with their new hardware in hand for their second season at the helm of the Duck lacrosse team beginning next February.
