EUGENE, Ore. - The 18th-ranked Oregon volleyball team got a live tune-up before next week's season-opener on Saturday in a green-yellow scrimmage, with Team Green and Team Yellow playing to a 14-25, 25-23, 25-22, 9-15 tie in four sets at Matthew Knight Arena.
Team Yellow was made up of nine Ducks that will likely comprise the majority of the Ducks' main rotation, while Team Green consisted of the remaining five Ducks with setters August Raskie and Maggie Scott rotating between both teams. Pro Duck Amanda Benson, assistant coach Dave Butler and volunteer assistant coach James Tessier also played on Team Green.
How it Happened: Team Yellow started fast in the opening set, jumping out to a 12-6 lead. Yellow extended its lead to 20-10 before finishing off the 25-14 win, led by five kills on seven swings from sophomore right-side Willow Johnson.
The second set was tight most of the way, with the two sides playing to a 20-20 tie. Yellow gained a slight advantage with a Johnson kill and a Green error to take a 22-20 lead, but Green finished the set on a 5-1 run to win the game and knot the match at a set apiece. Lauren Page led the way in the set with five kills for Green.
After playing to a 12-12 tie, Green gained some momentum and played its way to set point, 24-19. A pair of kills by Taylor Agost and one each from Johnson and Lindsey Vander Weide pulled Yellow within two before Green finished it off for the set win. The two coaches on the Green side put down nine of Green's 14 kills in the set.
In a final game to 15, Yellow came out hot and took an 8-4 lead. Yellow would extend its lead to 12-6 before Green pulled within 13-9, but Yellow finished off the set with a pair of points to end the match in a 2-2 tie. Johnson led all players with four kills in the final set.
Who Stood Out: Johnson was a clear bright spot for Yellow, putting down 15 kills while hitting .500, and Page led Green with 15 kills and nine blocks. Agost had eight kills for Yellow, and Sumeet Gill hit .467 with seven kills. Brooke Van Sickle and Kyra Hanawahine tied for the match lead with 17 digs, and Van Sickle led all players with a pair of aces. Scott and Raskie finished with 39 and 36 assists, respectively, while switching between the two sides.
Up Next: The Ducks will now have a couple more days of practice in Eugene before heading to Gainesville, Fla., to open their season against No. 5 Nebraska (Friday, 2 p.m. PT) and No. 1 Texas (Saturday, 4:30 p.m., Longhorn Network) in the VERT Challenge.
