EUGENE, Ore. – Former Oregon closer Jimmie Sherfy was called up today by the Arizona Diamondbacks becoming the fourth Duck of the modern era to reach the big leagues.
Sherfy, a 10th-round draft pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft, was an All-American and a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013 at Oregon when he combined for a school-record 40 saves. As a junior, the right-handed pitcher was also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award while earning first-team All-Pac-12 Conference recognition for the second straight season. He broke his own school record for saves with 21, besting his 2012 total of 19, while setting a new school record for appearances with 38. During his three seasons with the Ducks, Sherfy recorded 40 saves, 24 more than any other player in school history, while also setting the school record for games finished (70). He also ranks sixth in the school's all-time top 10 in lowest opponent batting average.
During his time in the Diamondbacks minor league system, Sherfy has compiled 63 saves including 17 this season with the Triple-A Reno Aces. After starting the 2016 season in Class-A (Advanced) Visalia, Sherfy was promoted to Double-A Mobile and then to Reno combining to save 30 games in the three spots. He was named a mid-season all-star in both 2016 and 2017.
Sherfy joins former Ducks Tyler Anderson and Ryon Healy in the majors. Anderson is on the 60-day disabled list with the Colorado Rockies, while Healy is batting .262 with 21 home runs and 66 RBI for the Oakland Athletics. Scott McGough, who is currently in Double-A with the Baltimore Orioles, was the first modern-era Duck to play in the majors. He was called up by the Miami Marlins on August 19, 2015.
