Marissa Everett scored twice Sunday to give the Oregon soccer team its first win of the season, 2-0 over Kansas State at Papé Field.
The Oregon women's soccer team recorded its first win of the 2017 season Sunday, 2-0 over Kansas State before 404 fans at Papé Field. The Ducks bounced back from their loss Friday to North Carolina State, defeating a Wildcats team in its second season of competition.
How It Happened: Marissa Everett lead the Ducks (1-1) by scoring both goals, in the 26th and 49th minute, respectively.
The Ducks played with an attacking mentality, possessing the ball heavily in the Wildcats' backfield. Midway through the first half, Everett lined up a free kick just on top of the penalty box and blasted the ball in the top right corner with her right foot.
"I've been practicing that all summer, so it was nice to be able to use it in a game," Everett said.
The junior forward came upon an opportunity she couldn't pass up in the 49th minute, recognizing an opening at hand. Everett received the ball at midfield and immediately looked to create a shot with the ball at her feet, dribbling past two Wildcat defenders before striking at goal with her left foot from 25 yards out.
Who Stood Out: Along with Everett's two goals, which gave the junior from Canyon Lake, Calif., her first career multi-goal game, sophomore defender Alyssa Hinojosa held the defensive unit together for the Ducks, ensuring an Oregon shutout.
Oregon goalkeeper and Iceland international Halla Hinriksdottir was superb in goal for the Ducks, making three saves to earn Oregon's first shutout of the season.
What It Means: Oregon finishes the opening weekend at .500 and is confident heading into a week of preparation before visiting College Station, Texas, to play a ranked Texas A&M side.
Quotable:
Head Coach Kat Mertz
"We challenged the team to be a little bit grittier and have some more energy when we have the ball, so it was good to see that applied today. I am very proud of the girls."
"Texas A&M is fast and they've got some quick players in attack. They can run, so we will need to prepare for that. If we take away the intimidating home advantage, I think we will be OK."
Up Next: Oregon will face Texas A&M on the road Saturday (6 p.m. PT, SEC Network).
