Long-time UO broadcaster Jerry Allen to take on new role for basketball

EUGENE, Ore. – Duck fans tuning into Oregon IMG radio broadcasts will hear familiar voices in new roles for 2017-18.
Long-time play-by-play announcer Jerry Allen will move to the role of analyst for home men's basketball games, while Joey McMurry will take over play-by-play duties for the entire men's basketball schedule.
"It's been an honor to be able to call Oregon basketball for the last 30 years," said Allen. "I've been incredibly blessed to have been a part of some of the greatest moments in Oregon history.
"But I'm at the point in my life where I want to spend more time with my family, and can enjoy getting out and doing things with them," Allen said. "At the same time, I'm more excited than ever to be a part of the new direction of the football program and to remain a part of this very special place."
Allen, who is in his 31st year with Oregon, will continue as the play-by-play announcer for all Duck football games, in addition to his roles with the Duck Insider program and weekly IMG coaches' shows.
The Grants Pass, Ore., native will again be joined on football broadcasts by analyst Mike "Jorgy" Jorgensen, who is entering his 29th season calling games with Allen. McMurry will serve as IMG's football sideline reporter.
In addition to his new basketball assignment, McMurry will continue his duties calling Duck baseball, a spot he has manned for the last three seasons.
"Jerry Allen is an Oregon legend and his voice is synonymous with the Ducks," said UO athletic director Rob Mullens. "He has served the University with class, dignity and enthusiasm. Jerry will be missed at basketball road games, but we are fortunate to still have him with football and basketball home games."
Allen's last game as play-by-play announcer for the basketball team was the Ducks' historic appearance in the Final Four, as Oregon returned to college basketball's biggest stage for the first time since 1939.
While he is best known for his radio call on "The Pick" during the 1994 Oregon-Washington football game, he also had the call on some of the biggest moments in Oregon basketball history, including Dillon Brooks' buzzer-beater to upset No. 2 UCLA last season.
Other memorable calls include his description of Joe Young's long-range shot to defeat Utah in the 2015 Pac-12 Tournament semifinals, Aaron Brooks' running jumper to stun No. 1 UCLA at McArthur Court in 2007, and the back-to-back game-winners by Freddie Jones at USC and UCLA that clinched the 2001-02 Pac-10 title for the Ducks.
Allen was also on the call for two of the strangest finishes in program history. During the 1998-99 season, Allen was on the mic when USC's Adam Spanich hit a pair of three-pointers in 2.8 seconds to give the Trojans a stunning 85-84 win, the last one being a halfcourt prayer after a steal that Spanich swiped out of midair.
One year later, Allen called nearly an identical miraculous win for the Ducks against Arizona State. Trailing by four with 3.6 seconds left, Alex Scales hit a three to cut ASU's lead to one, and then after a Sun Devil turnover, Darius Wright lofted up an off-balance rainbow that somehow found the bottom of the net for a 76-74 Duck win.
In recent years, Allen added the term "jammerooski" to the Oregon basketball lexicon, usually while describing one of Jordan Bell's powerful dunks.
"Jerry Allen has had a great 30-year career calling Oregon men's basketball games," said Oregon IMG general manager Chris Bjork. "His voice has been part of the most iconic calls in school history.
"Jerry will certainly be missed in basketball but at the same time, we are fortunate to be able to elevate Joey McMurry as our new play-by-play announcer," Bjork said. "We are excited about the new direction and look forward to a great 2017-18 season."
