Ducks Open Fall at Rod Myers Invitational
09/14/17 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's golf team will head east to Durham, N.C. to play in the Rod Myers Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
The Ducks, ranked ninth in the preseason by the Golf Coaches Association of America, will look to keep building off their national runner-up finish and Pac-12 championship last year and their national championship in 2016.
Seven players from last year's team return this year, led by the 2017 Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award winner Norman Xiong and All-Pac-12 selections Ryan Gronlund and Edwin Yi.
Xiong comes into his sophomore year having competed in some of the most prestigious amateur golf events in the world this summer. He began his summer by playing for the United States Palmer Cup team before winning the Western Amateur in early August.
The PING All-American capped off his summer by helping lead the U.S. to a dominant victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup. Xiong went 3-0-1 in his matches, halving his final match of the weekend to clinch the win for the Americans.
Gronlund was the Ducks' highest finisher in stroke play at the NCAA Championship, finishing 2-under and T11 to help Oregon advance to match play. Yi brings the most collegiate experience to the team, having played on Oregon's NCAA title-winning team in 2016 while going a combined 3-3 in NCAA Championship match play over two years.
Four newcomers will join the Ducks this fall, hoping to fill the void left by 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year Wyndham Clark and 2016 NCAA Championship hero Sulman Raza.
New Zealand native Marcel Boet, Thomas Mulligan of Ireland and Long Beach State transfer Kymer Li from China bring an international flavor to the Ducks. Donald Kay rounds out the incoming group and is the only one from the United States.
The Ducks will face a strong field to open the season with last year's national semifinalist and No. 2 Vanderbilt, along with No. 11 Wake Forest leading the field of 12 teams.
Oregon will get its fall season underway at 5:27 a.m. PT Saturday with Xiong, Gronlund, Yi, Mulligan and Sam Foust competing while Kevin Geniza will play as an individual.
