Ducks Finish First in Stroke Play, Set to Face Wisconsin in Match Play
09/17/17 | Women's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – The Oregon women's golf team started the fall season in impressive fashion on Sunday at the East and West Match Play, finishing as the top overall seed heading into match play after shooting 3-under as a team through 36 holes of stroke play at University Ridge Golf Course.
Junior Kathleen Scavo finished tied for the individual overall lead at 7-under, and freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul came in third overall at 6-under in a terrific start to her collegiate career.
The Ducks will take on Wisconsin on Monday morning in the quarterfinals of match play, teeing off beginning at 7 a.m. PT.
How it Happened: Scavo picked up where she left off after a terrific summer, staying even or under par through all of round one, including an eagle on hole No. 2, to finish the round in second overall (-3). Scavo carried her strong play into the second round, picking up four birdies to shoot a 4-under 68 and finish stroke play at 7-under to take co-medalist honors.
Phadungmartvorakul had constant control over her game in a phenomenal collegiate debut, opening the day with nine birdies to finish the first round at 8-under (64) and as the overall leader. Phadungmartvorakul's 64 in the first round is the second-lowest single-round score in program history. The freshman from Taft, Calif., added five more birdies in the second round while shooting a 2-over 74 to close stroke play in third overall at 6-under. Phadungmartvorakul led the field with 14 total birdies through 36 holes.
What it Means: The Ducks got their 2017-18 season off to a great start after their reaching their second straight NCAA Championships last year, and will now look to perform well in the match play portion of the tournament that simulates the same format the Ducks would see at the national championships.

On Scavo…
"Kathleen Scavo loves this golf course, and I think it shows. It's amazing how many opportunities at birdie she had today. She burned edges all day long, and hit a ton of greens. We are excited to see what she does in match play."
On Phadungmartvorakul…
"Alexis (Phadungmartvorakul) had a very successful first day of college golf. She really used her length to her advantage, hit some quality iron shots and of course made everything she looked at this morning. We have enjoyed Alexis' seamless transition into this team and into college golf."
On the day…
"We are especially proud of the fight that they showed today. We didn't start the best in either of our two rounds today, but everyone recognized adjustments they needed to make and finished strong. Kelsey's bounce back was important for the team seeding; and Petra's steadiness all day was sure nice to count on."
Alexis Phadungmartvorakul, Freshman
On her day…
"I played loose today. I tried to focus on each individual shot, not thinking of them as part of of a 36-hole day. I had no expectations today, I just wanted to have fun and enjoy what I knew was going to be a long day and I think that really helped a lot!"
Kathleen Scavo, Junior
On how she felt today…
"Was great to get back to competing as a team today. Felt calm on the course and was able to hit a lot of greens which gave me good opportunities to contribute to the team's score. Happy with our team's strong performance in the stroke play portion of the tournament. Hope we can maintain the positive momentum and continue to improve as we head into match play tomorrow. Looking forward to a fun season!"
