Opportunities Await at UCLA, USC

EUGENE, Ore. - A big opportunity awaits Oregon when the Ducks travel to Los Angeles to play No. 1 UCLA (Thursday, 5 p.m.) and defending national champion USC (Sunday, 1 p.m., Pac-12 Live Stream). The Ducks and Bruins played one of the more entertaining matches in the Pac-12 a year ago, as a late goal allowed UCLA to escape Eugene with a 3-2 win.
KEY STORYLINES
• Kyra Fawcett, who led Oregon with five goals in 2016, has already scored four in 2017, including one last week at Arizona. Fawcett had back-to-back game-winning goal versus Oklahoma and Cal Poly and was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
• The Ducks' 6-2 non-conference record is the program's best since going 8-1-1 in 2005.
• Top play-maker Marissa Everett (5 assists in 2016) leads Oregon with three goals and three assists in 2017. She got her fifth career game-winning goal Sept. 8 vs. Idaho, which is tied for sixth all-time at Oregon.
• In 2016, Oregon led or was tied at the half 17 times, but had an 8-7-2 record to show for it. The Ducks are 6-0-0 in that category so far in 2017.
• The team is using the "water the bamboo" parable as motivation. It takes five years before a bamboo tree breaks the surface; coincidentally, this is head coach Kat Mertz's fifth year at Oregon. Hence the hashtag #BreakThrough.
