Ducks Drop a Close One at Top-Ranked UCLA
09/28/17 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Save a six minute stretch in the first half, Oregon played even with the nation's top-ranked team Thursday night. But with the aid of hand ball foul called just outside the Ducks' box early in the first half, UCLA (9-0-1, 2-0-0) earned a 2-0 victory at Drake Stadium.
Goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir made a number of diving stops to keep the Ducks (6-4-0, 0-2-0) in the game and ended up tying her season high with six saves.
How It Happened: Oregon was whistled for a hand ball in the 16th minute that gave UCLA a free kick just outside the Ducks' box. The Bruins' Anika Rodriguez curled a shot into the far corner for the first goal of the match.
UCLA added a goal by Hailie Mace in the 22nd minute.
The Ducks and Bruins were nearly even in shots with UCLA taking 13 and Oregon attempting 11.
Who Stood Out: Hinriksdottir anchored a stout defensive effort against a UCLA team that is just one of four unbeaten teams left in NCAA Division I. Her six saves were one shy of her career high of seven set last season at Washington State.
On the offensive end, Marissa Everett led the Ducks with four shots, including two on goal.
What It Means: This is the second straight year that Oregon has played a tight match with UCLA. Last season the Bruins needed a late goal to escape Eugene with a 3-2 win.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"Other than that six-minute stretch there in the first half, we played even with one of the top teams in the country. I'm disappointed that we lost, but not disappointed in our effort."
"On offense we were able to create some fantastic chances, and Halla (Hinriksdottir) played extremely well-composed and led our team."
Notable: Everett had four shots to give her 104 in her career. She passed Erin Anderson (100/1996-99) for eighth in career shots on Thursday. … Oregon's leading scorer Kyra Fawcett left the game with an injury in the 19th minute and did not return. … The Ducks did get some good news on the injury front as both Mia Costa and Bayley Bruner saw the field Thursday. Bruner had missed the last three games and Costa the last two.
Up Next: Oregon visits defending NCAA Champion USC Sunday at 1 p.m. (Pac-12 Live Stream). The Trojans come into the match ranked seventh nationally.
