EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon women's basketball guard Sabrina Ionescu is one of 25 players named to the Wooden Award midseason watch list, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced on Thursday.
The sophomore leads the Ducks with 18.6 points per game, 7.5 assists per game, 1.9 steals per game and is second on the team averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. Ionescu has four triple-doubles this season and owns the NCAA career record with eight. She ranks sixth in the NCAA in assists per game (7.5) and sixth in total assists (127). The guard has been named the Pac-12 player of the week five times out of nine weeks.
Ionescu is one of just two underclassmen selected to the midseason watch list. Texas A&M freshman guard Chennedy Carter was also included.
The watch list, which started with 50 prior to the season, will be cut down to 20 in February. A final list of 15 will be given to award voters and the winner will be announced during the ESPN College Basketball Awards show on April 6.
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation's best basketball player at a NCAA Div. I university.
Previous winners include Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), and last year's recipients, Kelsey Plum of Washington and Frank Mason III of Kansas.
