Stoffal’s Career Day Completes Sweep of Wildcats
05/21/22 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Jace Stoffal tossed a career-high seven innings and allowed just one run as Oregon completed the sweep of Arizona with a 5-3 win in the regular season finale.
Prior to Saturday's game, Stoffal's career-high in innings pitched was 4.2 but he advanced into the eighth inning to pick up his first career win. The sophomore tied his career-high with three strikeouts while giving up just three hits and a walk.
"Jace Stoffal set the tone today," Oregon head coach Mark Wasikowski said. "He was throwing four pitches for strikes and locating the ball. That's hard to hit."
How it happened: The Ducks (35-21, 18-12 Pac-12) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Anthony Hall worked around the shift, poking a single through the left side of the infield before advancing to second and coming around to score when Bennett Thompson singled up the middle.
Tanner Smith added on later in the frame. The junior laced a two-out double into right-center field, scoring Walsh from third and Thompson from first. The RBI were Smith's 109th and 110th in his career, moving him to fifth all-time and just eight behind Ryon Healy for fourth (118).
Walsh provided a little more insurance in the sixth, driving a 2-1 pitch into center field to score Drew Cowley from second. The freshman finished the day 2-for-4, extending his on-base streak to seven games.
Though the extra breathing room was nice, Stoffal ensured it wasn't necessary. The native of Roseburg, Ore. posted zero after zero, at one point retiring 16 straight Wildcats between the second and seventh innings. Stoffal allowed just five baserunners total with two coming in the eighth inning before he ceded the mound to Rio Britton.
The bullpen got a bit more help in the bottom of the eighth. Cowley doubled with a runner on first and Arizona intentionally walked Hall to load the bases. Thompson then walked to put Oregon up 5-1.
Four runs was more than enough for Kolby Somers, who closed out the win in his 85th career appearance. The fifth-year senior, who was honored pregame, is tied with Stephen Nogosek for the second-most appearances in school history.
Inside the Box Score: Smith started his 178th game, moving into fourth all-time ahead of Danny Pulfer (177 starts, 2009-11) … The start was Smith's 156th in a row, extending his own school record … His two-RBI double gave the junior 110 career RBI, which ranks fifth all-time … Smith also had his sixth multi-RBI game of the season and the 21st of his career … Thompson put together his second multi-RBI game and third multi-hit game of the season and his career … Walsh's multiple-hit outing was his 12th … Hall had two-or-more hits for the 15th time this year and the 26th time in his career … Josh Kasevich made his 111th straight start at shortstop, the fifth-longest streak of any Duck and second-longest active streak behind Smith.
Up Next: The Ducks head to Scottsdale, Ariz. for a rematch with the Wildcats in the Pac-12 Tournament. Fourth-seeded Oregon will square off with fifth-seeded Arizona once again at 9 a.m. on March 25.
